Can I pay zakat al-fitr online?

Yes, you can pay zakat al-fitr online through a trustworthy mosque or charity. The charity acts as your agent, so what matters is that it reaches poor people on time, before the Eid prayer, and in a form your school of thought accepts.
Why paying through someone else is fine
Scholars agree that you can appoint an agent (wakil) to hand out your zakat for you. The Companions did this too: Ibn Umar used to give his zakat al-fitr to the people who collected it a day or two before Eid (Sahih al-Bukhari 1511). An online payment to a mosque or charity is the modern version of that. The intention is yours, and the charity simply delivers it. See How much is zakat al-fitr and when do I pay it?
Timing is the key condition
The Prophet ﷺ ordered zakat al-fitr to be paid before people go out to the Eid prayer (Sahih al-Bukhari 1503). Paying it after the prayer turns it into ordinary sadaqah, according to a well-known narration from Ibn Abbas (Sunan Abi Dawud 1609). So:
- Pay early in the last days of Ramadan, not on Eid morning when payment pages crash and deadlines pass.
- Check the charity's own cut-off date. Many close zakat al-fitr a few days before Eid so they can distribute in time.
- If the money goes abroad, make sure the charity distributes before Eid in that country too.
Several early scholars linked this verse and the next one ("and mentions the name of his Lord and prays") to paying zakat al-fitr and then going to the Eid prayer.
Food or cash?
The Prophet ﷺ fixed it as a sa' (about 2.5–3 kg) of staple food. The Hanafi school allows paying its value in money, while the Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools prefer food. Many online charities in the UK, Europe and the US take cash and then buy food parcels locally, which satisfies both views. If your school matters to you, choose a charity that states it gives food.
Choosing a reliable platform
Pick an organisation that keeps zakat al-fitr separate from general donations, explains where and when it distributes, and is registered as a charity. Your local mosque's website is often the simplest option. See How do I choose a trustworthy charity for my zakat?
- Paying online is allowed: the charity acts as your agent.
- It must reach the poor before the Eid prayer, so pay a few days early.
- Hanafis accept cash; other schools prefer food, which many charities buy for you.
- Use a registered, transparent charity or your local mosque.
