Yes, according to most scholars. Once your wealth has reached the nisab, you can pay zakat before your zakat date, for example in Ramadan or during an emergency appeal. The Prophet ﷺ allowed his uncle to do this. The Maliki school is stricter and generally allows it only shortly before the due date.

The Prophet allowed it

Al-Abbas, the Prophet's uncle, asked about paying his zakat before it became due, and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ gave him permission (Sunan Abi Dawud 1624). Scholars took this as the basis for paying zakat in advance.

What the schools say

  • Hanafi, Shafi'i and Hanbali: allowed once you own wealth at or above the nisab. Some allow paying up to two years ahead.
  • Maliki: generally not valid before the due date, except within a short period (such as a month) before it.
  • Before reaching the nisab: paying "zakat" doesn't count as zakat yet, though it's still rewarded as charity.

How to settle up

An early payment is an estimate. On your actual zakat date, calculate what's due. If you paid less, pay the difference. If you paid more, the extra is still rewarded. You can treat it as sadaqah, or, in the view of many scholars, count it toward next year. See How do I calculate my zakat?

When paying early helps

  • Ramadan: to give in a blessed month when your zakat date falls later.
  • Emergencies: a disaster appeal or a relative in urgent need.
  • Budgeting: spreading zakat as monthly advance payments. See Can I pay zakat monthly?

What you can't do is pay late on purpose. Once zakat is due, it should be paid promptly.

Key points
  • Most scholars allow paying zakat early.
  • You must already own wealth above the nisab.
  • The Maliki school is stricter about timing.
  • Reconcile on your zakat date.
Tip: When you give early, make a clear intention that it's zakat and note the amount and date. It saves guesswork when your zakat date arrives.
