Yes, you can play the Quran on a smart speaker like Alexa, Google Home or a Sonos. It's just another way of listening, like a phone or a CD. Keep it respectful: not in the bathroom, not as background noise during haram activities, and listen when you can.

A speaker is like any other device

Muslims have played Quran recordings on cassettes, radios and phones for decades, and scholars accept this as a normal way to listen. A smart speaker is no different. You can ask it to play a surah, set up a daily playlist, or stream a reciter from a Quran app. Many families play Surah al-Baqarah at home or have a short surah on in the morning.

A recording isn't the same as reading it yourself, but listening still has great value. See Is listening to the Quran as good as reading it?

Listen, don't just leave it on

The Quran asks for attention when it's recited:

وَإِذَا قُرِئَ ٱلْقُرْءَانُ فَٱسْتَمِعُوا۟ لَهُۥ وَأَنصِتُوا۟ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ "So when the Quran is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy." Quran 7:204

Most scholars say this applies fully during prayer, and as a strong encouragement outside it. Having it on while you cook or tidy up is fine, as long as you're not ignoring it completely. Where and when to switch it off

  • Bathroom: don't play the Quran in the toilet. If your speakers are in a multi-room group, take the bathroom one out. Carrying a phone with a Quran app is different. See Can I take my phone into the bathroom if it has a Quran app?
  • Haram settings: not alongside a party with alcohol or other haram activity.
  • Neighbours: keep the volume considerate, especially at night.
  • Ads: some free streams insert music ads between surahs. A Quran app or paid plan avoids that.

Playing it for protection

Some people leave the Quran playing all day to protect the home. Reciting and listening bring blessing, but the sunnah is to recite yourself, too: Ayat al-Kursi, the last two verses of al-Baqarah and the three Quls. A speaker supports this, it doesn't replace it. Key points
  • Playing the Quran on a smart speaker is allowed.
  • Listen with attention when you can (Quran 7:204).
  • Keep it out of bathrooms and haram settings.
  • It supports your own recitation; it doesn't replace it.
Tip: Set a smart speaker routine that plays a short surah after Fajr or before bed. It's a gentle way to make listening a daily habit for the whole family.
