Can I pray after using hand sanitizer?

Yes. Most scholars today say the alcohol in hand sanitizer does not make your hands impure, so you can pray after using it. If you follow the stricter view, rinse your hands with water first. Sanitizer does not replace wudu, and it does not break your wudu either.
Why there is a question
Drinking alcohol is forbidden, and the Quran calls intoxicants rijs, a word often translated as "evil" or "filth" (Quran 5:90). Scholars have discussed whether that means alcohol is physically impure (najis), like urine, or morally unclean. Some classical scholars said wine is physically impure. Others, past and present, said the word describes moral filth and not a substance you must wash off. This is why you will hear different answers.
Sanitizer is a different case
The alcohol in hand sanitizer is ethanol or isopropyl alcohol, made for cleaning. It is not wine and it is not drunk. Many contemporary scholars therefore say it is not najis, and even scholars who treat wine as impure often say industrial alcohol is a different thing. On this view, you can pray with sanitizer on your hands or clothes. The same reasoning is used for perfume and cleaning sprays. See Is perfume with alcohol haram?
What to do before you pray
- If you already have wudu, sanitizer does not break it. You can pray right away.
- If you need wudu, you wash with water anyway, and that rinses the sanitizer off too.
- If you want to follow the stricter view, rinse your hands with water and wash any splashed spot on your clothes.
- Let it dry if you can. It is neater, and it avoids touching your clothes while wet.
Sanitizer cleans germs but it is not water, so it cannot take the place of wudu. See Can I use hand sanitizer instead of wudu?
Staying clean without stress
The Prophet ﷺ said, "Cleanliness is half of faith" (Sahih Muslim 223). Using sanitizer in a hospital, on a train or at work is part of looking after your health, and nothing in Islam asks you to avoid it. The Quran also reminds us of Allah's ease:
Do not drink sanitizer or let children swallow it. It is harmful, and drinking alcohol is forbidden. For cooking and flavorings, see Is vanilla extract haram because it has alcohol?
- Most contemporary scholars say sanitizer alcohol is not najis.
- Stricter scholars advise rinsing with water before prayer.
- Sanitizer neither breaks wudu nor replaces it.
- Never drink it; keep it away from children.
