Can I pray in a car?

Yes, in a parked car if you have no better option. Park safely, face the qibla and pray as well as you can. If you can step outside, standing on the ground beside the car is better, because the obligatory prayer is meant to be prayed standing with your forehead on the ground. Never pray while driving.
Step outside first if you can
The Prophet ﷺ prayed voluntary prayers on his mount, facing whichever way it went, but when he wanted to pray an obligatory prayer he dismounted and prayed facing the qibla (Sahih al-Bukhari 400). Scholars apply this to cars. So if you can get out safely, pray on the ground next to the car, on a mat or a jacket. A quiet corner of a car park, a grass verge or a rest area usually works. For longer journeys, see How do I pray on a road trip?
When the car is your only place
Sometimes stepping out is not realistic: heavy rain or snow, a bad area at night, or the prayer time is about to end. In that case, you can pray in the parked car. The Prophet ﷺ told a man with an illness, "Pray while standing, and if you can't, pray while sitting, and if you cannot do even that, then pray lying on your side" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1117). Scholars extend this to any situation where standing or prostrating is truly not possible.
How to pray seated in a car
- Park safely off the road, turn the engine off and put the handbrake on.
- Make wudu beforehand, or do tayammum if there is no water. See How do I do tayammum?
- Face the qibla. Use a compass app, and if you can park in the right direction, do so. If not, turn your body toward it in the seat.
- Stand if you can, otherwise sit. If the steering wheel is in the way, move to the passenger or back seat.
- Lean forward a little for bowing, and lower for prostration, without putting your head on anything unsafe.
Do I repeat it later?
If you prayed in the car because of a real need, many scholars say your prayer counts. Others advise repeating it once you can pray normally, to be safe. If you are not sure which applies to you, ask a trusted imam. Voluntary prayers are much easier, since they can be prayed seated, as on the bus or train. See Can I pray on a bus or train?
- Step outside and pray on the ground if you safely can.
- If not, a parked car is allowed; face the qibla and pray seated.
- Do what you are able to, and no more is asked of you.
- Never pray while driving.
