Yes, usually. Sweat is pure, so sweaty workout clothes don't spoil your prayer. What matters is that your clothes cover your awrah properly, aren't see-through or very clingy, and have no najis stain on them. If they're soaked, smelly or revealing, change or add a layer when you can.

Sweat isn't the problem

Human sweat is not impure, so a damp T-shirt or pair of leggings doesn't make your prayer invalid. The things that do matter are covering, cleanliness from real impurities and basic courtesy. See Is sweat najis in Islam?

Covering is the real question

The Quran tells us to dress properly when we pray:

يَـٰبَنِىٓ ءَادَمَ خُذُوا۟ زِينَتَكُمْ عِندَ كُلِّ مَسْجِدٍ "O Children of Adam! Dress properly whenever you are at worship." Quran 7:31

Scholars understand this to include covering the awrah and wearing decent clothes. In practice:

  • Men: cover at least from the navel to the knee. Short gym shorts often don't, so pull on track pants or knee-length shorts. A top that covers the shoulders is best too: the Prophet ﷺ said, "None of you should offer prayer in a single garment that does not cover the shoulders" (Sahih al-Bukhari 359). Scholars differ on whether this is required or recommended, and a T-shirt solves it either way.
  • Women: cover everything except the face and hands. Leggings and fitted tops are fine for prayer only if they aren't see-through, so add a long top or prayer garment over them.

Light fabric can go see-through or cling when it's wet with sweat, so check in a mirror before you pray. See Can I pray in jeans?

Check these before you pray

  • Najis stains: blood from a cut, urine or vomit on your clothes need washing or changing. A mystery mark doesn't count. See Can I pray with a stain on my clothes?
  • Riding-up clothes: check that your shirt doesn't lift and your waistband doesn't slip when you bow and prostrate.
  • Strong smell: especially if you're praying beside others, change your top or freshen up if you can.

When to change or shower first

If you have clean clothes in your bag and a few minutes, changing is the nicest option. If the prayer time is about to end and you only have your gym clothes, pray in them rather than miss the time. A prayer in clean, covering, sweaty clothes is valid. Allah does not ask for perfection, only for what you can reasonably do. See Do I have to shower before praying after a workout?

Key points
  • Sweat is pure and doesn't invalidate your prayer.
  • Clothes must cover the awrah and not be see-through.
  • Wash or change if you have a najis stain on your clothes.
  • Don't miss a prayer time just because you couldn't change.
Tip: Pack a lightweight long top or loose jogger bottoms in your gym bag. They go over any workout kit and make your prayer clothes ready in seconds.
