Yes, your prayer is valid with rolled-up sleeves, but it is better to roll them down. Most scholars say rolling up your sleeves or tucking up your clothes for prayer is disliked (makruh), not forbidden. The easy fix is to unroll them after wudu.

Why it's discouraged

The Prophet ﷺ said he was commanded to prostrate on seven bones and not to tuck up his clothes or hair while praying (Sahih al-Bukhari 810). Scholars understand "not tucking up clothes" to include rolling sleeves up, folding trouser legs, or holding your clothes away from the floor during sujood.

The idea is humility. In prayer you stand before Allah as you are, and your clothes go down to the ground with you in prostration. Allah also tells us to dress well for worship:

يَـٰبَنِىٓ ءَادَمَ خُذُوا۟ زِينَتَكُمْ عِندَ كُلِّ مَسْجِدٍ "O children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid." Quran 7:31

Is my prayer still valid?

Yes. All four schools agree the prayer counts, because a man's arms are not part of the awrah that must be covered (navel to knee). The difference is only about how disliked it is:

  • Hanafi, Shafi'i and Hanbali: makruh to pray with sleeves rolled up, whether you rolled them for the prayer or before it.
  • Maliki: mainly disliked if you rolled them up specifically for the prayer; if they were already rolled for work, it's lighter.

So if you prayed like this in the past, there is nothing to repeat. For what you must cover, see What do I have to cover when praying at home alone?

What about women?

For a woman, the arms are part of the awrah in prayer, so rolled-up sleeves that expose the forearms are a bigger issue than a matter of etiquette. Make sure your sleeves reach the wrists, or wear a long prayer garment over your clothes.

The wudu habit

Most people roll their sleeves up to wash their arms in wudu and simply forget to roll them down again. Make it part of your routine: wash, dry, unroll, then pray. See What are the obligatory parts of wudu?

If you are at work in a uniform with short or rolled sleeves, don't stress. Pray on time; the prayer is valid. The same relaxed approach applies to everyday clothes like jeans; see Can I pray in jeans?
