Can I read the Quran in a state of janabah?

Not usually. Most scholars say that if you are in a state of janabah (major ritual impurity, for example after intimacy), you should take ghusl before reciting the Quran. Remembering Allah, making dua and listening to the Quran are all fine in the meantime, and ghusl only takes a few minutes.

What janabah means

Janabah is the state of major ritual impurity that follows sexual intercourse or ejaculation. It is a ritual state, not dirt on your body, and it is removed by ghusl, the full-body wash. Abu Hurairah once slipped away from the Prophet ﷺ because he was in janabah, and the Prophet ﷺ told him, "Subhan Allah! A believer never becomes impure" (Sahih al-Bukhari 283). So there is no shame in it. It simply means some acts of worship wait until you have washed. See How do I do ghusl?

What most scholars say about reciting

Most scholars, including the Hanafi, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools, say a person in janabah should not recite the Quran until ghusl. Their main evidence is a report from Ali that the Prophet ﷺ would recite the Quran in all conditions as long as he was not in janabah (Jami at-Tirmidhi 146). A few scholars question how strong that report is, which is one reason opinions differ.

What is clear from the Quran is that prayer is not valid in this state until you have bathed:

وَلَا جُنُبًا إِلَّا عَابِرِى سَبِيلٍ حَتَّىٰ تَغْتَسِلُوا۟ "...nor in a state of [full] impurity—unless you merely pass through [the mosque]—until you have bathed." Quran 4:43

What you can still do

  • Dhikr and dua: allowed. Aisha said the Prophet ﷺ used to remember Allah at all moments (Sahih Muslim 373). "Bismillah" and "Alhamdulillah" are fine.
  • Listening: you can listen to recitation, a lecture or an audio lesson.
  • Translation and tafsir: most scholars allow reading these, since they explain the Quran rather than being the Arabic text itself.
  • Reflecting: thinking about verses in your heart is fine.
  • Verses as dua: many scholars allow saying a verse as a dua, such as "Our Lord, give us good in this world," as long as you mean it as a supplication and not as recitation.

Where scholars differ

Not everyone takes the strict view. Some Maliki scholars allow a few verses for protection or learning, and a minority of scholars allow recitation from memory in general, as long as you don't touch the mushaf (the written copy). If you are a student of the Quran with a lesson coming up, ask your teacher or a trusted imam which opinion they recommend. See Can I recite the Quran from memory on my period? for the related question for women.

In practice, the easiest solution is to wash soon. Never delay a prayer just to avoid ghusl. See Can I sleep in a state of janabah? and Can I read the Quran on my phone without wudu?

Key points
  • Janabah is a ritual state removed by ghusl, nothing to be ashamed of.
  • Most scholars say wait for ghusl before reciting the Quran.
  • Dhikr, dua, listening and reading a translation are all allowed.
  • Some scholars are more lenient, so ask your imam if you are unsure.
Tip: Keep a few short adhkar in mind to say while you wait to wash, then take ghusl and go straight back to your recitation.
