Can I read the Quran on my phone without wudu?

Yes, according to most contemporary scholars. A phone or tablet with a Quran app is not a mushaf (a written copy of the Quran), so the rules about touching the mushaf don't apply to it in the same way. You can scroll, tap and read without wudu. Having wudu is still better and more respectful when it's easy.

Why a phone is treated differently

The classical rule that you need wudu to touch the Quran is about the physical mushaf: the pages with the words written on them. A phone is different in a few ways:

  • The words aren't fixed: the text is light on a screen. Close the app and it's gone, and the same device holds messages, maps and music.
  • There's a barrier: your finger touches glass, not the letters themselves. Scholars who allow touching the mushaf with a barrier apply that reasoning here too.
  • It isn't called a mushaf: most scholars today, including many fatwa councils, say the phone doesn't take the ruling of a printed copy.

A minority of scholars are more cautious and suggest not touching the screen directly over the verses without wudu, for example scrolling from the edge. That's a fine habit if you want to be extra careful.

Reading without touching is fine anyway

Even for a printed Quran, the main question is about touching it. Reading or reciting from memory without wudu (when you're not in the state that requires ghusl) is allowed by agreement of the scholars. The Prophet ﷺ remembered Allah all the time: "The Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) used to remember Allah at all moments" (Sahih Muslim 373), and the Quran praises people who remember Allah in every position:

ٱلَّذِينَ يَذْكُرُونَ ٱللَّهَ قِيَٰمًۭا وَقُعُودًۭا وَعَلَىٰ جُنُوبِهِمْ "Who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides" Quran 3:191

What about after intimacy or on your period?

This is a separate question. Most scholars say a person who needs ghusl (after intimacy or a wet dream) shouldn't recite the Quran until they bathe. Ali said the Prophet ﷺ "would recite the Qur'an in all conditions, as long as he was not Junub" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 146). The period has its own discussion, see Can I recite the Quran from memory on my period?

Small habits of respect

  • Make wudu when you can: it's a lovely way to prepare, even if not required for a phone.
  • Use a dedicated app: fewer pop-up notifications in the middle of a surah.
  • Mind the place: close the app before going into the bathroom.

For printed copies the rule is stricter. And if you mostly listen, see Can I listen to the Quran while driving or doing chores?

Key points
  • Most scholars allow reading from a phone without wudu.
  • A phone isn't treated as a printed mushaf.
  • Wudu is still recommended and rewarding.
  • After intimacy, most scholars say make ghusl before reciting.
Tip: Keep a Quran app on your home screen and read a few verses in small gaps of the day, on the bus or in a queue. You don't need to hunt for a sink first.
