Yes, you can. Rinsing your mouth with a little water and spitting it all out does not break the fast, as long as you don't swallow any and don't gargle deeply. Rinsing is even part of wudu. Keep the rinse light, lean forward and spit well, especially if your mouth feels very dry.

Rinsing is allowed

A fast is broken by swallowing food or drink, not by water touching your mouth. Muslims rinse their mouths in every wudu, including during Ramadan. The only change for fasting people is to be gentle. The Prophet ﷺ told a Companion: "Snuff up water freely unless you are fasting" (Sunan Abi Dawud 2366). Scholars understand from this that a fasting person should not exaggerate with water in the mouth or nose, so none goes down the throat.

How to rinse safely

  • Take a small amount. A teaspoon or a small sip is enough.
  • Swish gently around the front of the mouth, then lean forward and spit.
  • Don't gargle at the back of the throat or tip your head back.
  • Spit fully so that no water stays in your mouth.
  • Don't repeat it again and again. Once or twice is plenty.

What if a little goes down?

If you swallow by forgetting that you are fasting, the fast is valid: "If somebody eats or drinks forgetfully then he should complete his fast, for what he has eaten or drunk has been given to him by Allah" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1933).

If a drop slips down by accident while you were rinsing and you remembered you were fasting, scholars differ. Many say the fast is still valid because you did not intend it and did not exaggerate. The Hanafi and Maliki schools say you should make up that day. Because it is so easy to avoid, take extra care, and ask your local imam if it happens. See Does swallowing my spit break my fast?

If your mouth feels dry

A dry mouth is a normal part of fasting, and it is mostly uncomfortable rather than harmful. A few things can help:

  • Drink plenty of water between iftar and bedtime, and again at suhoor.
  • Eat water-rich foods at suhoor, such as cucumber, melon and soup.
  • Go easy on salty, spicy and very sugary foods that increase thirst.
  • Cut back on tea and coffee, which can dry you out.
  • Breathe through your nose, and keep your lips moist with balm.

Dry mouth also makes breath less fresh, but that is nothing to be embarrassed about. The Prophet ﷺ said the smell from the mouth of a fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the smell of musk (Sahih al-Bukhari 1894). See Can I brush my teeth while fasting?

Key points
  • Rinsing and spitting does not break the fast.
  • Use a small amount, lean forward and avoid gargling.
  • Forgetful swallowing does not break the fast, but an accidental slip is debated.
  • Staying hydrated at night is the best way to ease a dry mouth.
Tip: If you feel dizzy or faint, not just dry-mouthed, that is a different situation. Sit down and rest, and remember that breaking the fast is allowed if it is making you unwell.
