Can I show my face in photos if I wear niqab?

It depends on who will see the photo. Showing your face in pictures for family, other women or official ID is generally fine. Posting face photos publicly, where strangers can see them, goes against the very reason you chose niqab, so most niqabi women keep their face out of public posts.
Why it matters for a niqabi
If you wear niqab, you've decided your face is part of what you keep private from non-mahram men. Whether you hold niqab to be required (the view of many Hanbali and some Shafi'i scholars) or a recommended extra (the majority view), it would be odd to cover your face in the street and then share it with thousands of strangers online. The aim of covering is dignity and protection:
Photos that are fine
- Private family photos kept on your phone or shared with your husband, parents and other mahrams.
- Photos with other women in a closed group, as long as you trust them not to forward them.
- Passports, ID cards and driving licences. Showing your face here is a legal need, and scholars agree it's allowed.
Photos to think twice about
- Public social media. Anyone can see, save or share them. Many niqabi women post photos of the niqab itself, their hands, or scenery instead.
- Group chats with men outside the family, such as work or study groups.
- Wedding and party photos taken by others. Ask politely that your uncovered face isn't posted.
Some scholars have reservations about photography in general, but most today allow ordinary photos for a valid purpose. See Is it haram to take selfies? and Can I post photos of myself online as a Muslim?
Once it's online, it's out of your hands
Even "private" posts get screenshotted. Cloud backups can be shared by mistake. Treat any photo of your uncovered face like your home address: share it only where you'd be comfortable if it spread. Turn off automatic face tagging and check who can see your shared albums.
- Face photos for family, women and official ID are fine.
- Public face photos clash with the purpose of niqab.
- Scholars differ on niqab itself, but privacy is shared ground.
- Check privacy settings; online photos spread easily.
