Can I sing in the school choir as a Muslim?

It depends on what the choir sings. Singing itself isn't forbidden in Islam, and most scholars allow singing with clean words. The problems are hymns and carols that praise beliefs Muslims don't share, songs with sinful lyrics, and, for those following the stricter view, instrumental accompaniment. Many Muslim students join a choir but sit out specific songs, or choose a secular or a cappella group.

Singing is not the problem

On an Eid day, two girls were singing in the house of the Prophet ﷺ. When Abu Bakr objected, the Prophet ﷺ let them carry on, saying: "O Abu Bakr! There is an 'Id for every nation and this is our 'Id" (Sahih al-Bukhari 952). He also said: "Some poetry contains wisdom" (Sahih al-Bukhari 6145). So a song with good, clean words, sung well, isn't something to be ashamed of.

What to watch out for

  • Religious hymns and carols: many choir songs, especially at Christmas and Easter, praise Jesus as Lord or God, or the Trinity. Singing these means saying, out loud, beliefs that contradict Islam's core belief in one God. Most scholars say to avoid them.
  • Lyrics: songs about romance, drinking or other sinful themes are a problem in any setting.
  • Instruments: scholars differ on musical instruments. If you follow the stricter view, a cappella pieces are the easiest fit. See Can I take music class as a Muslim?
  • Girls singing in front of men: some scholars discourage women from singing in front of unrelated men, while others allow it in a group when the performance is modest. Follow the view of a scholar you trust.

The Quran gives a simple, respectful principle for other faiths' worship:

لَكُمْ دِينُكُمْ وَلِىَ دِينِ "For you is your religion, and for me is my religion." Quran 109:6

Practical options

  • Check the song list: ask the choir leader for the term's program before you commit.
  • Sit out specific pieces: you can stand quietly or step off stage for one or two hymns. Many choir leaders are used to this.
  • Choose the right group: pop, jazz or a cappella choirs usually sing fewer religious songs than chapel or church choirs.
  • Look for nasheed groups: some schools, universities and mosques have Muslim vocal groups.

What to say

Keep it short and positive: "I love singing with the choir, but I don't sing religious songs from other faiths because of my own beliefs. Is it okay if I sit out those pieces?" Most teachers will respect that, especially if you're committed to the rest. For a similar question about singing in public, see Can I still sing the national anthem as a Muslim?

Key points
  • Singing clean songs is allowed by most scholars.
  • Avoid hymns and carols that praise other beliefs.
  • Scholars differ on instruments and on women singing before men.
  • Check the song list and sit out what doesn't fit.
Tip: Talk to the choir leader at the start of the year, not the week of the concert. Early notice gives them time to plan your part, or to add a song everyone can sing.
