Yes, technically you can, because taraweeh is a sunnah, not an obligation. Skipping it isn't a sin. But Ramadan nights are rare and precious, so try not to trade them for a match: pray at home, pray part of it, or catch the highlights after.

Taraweeh is sunnah, not fard

Taraweeh is the extra night prayer in Ramadan. All four schools agree it's a highly recommended sunnah (sunnah mu'akkadah), not a compulsory prayer like the five daily ones. The Prophet ﷺ prayed it in congregation for a few nights and then stopped, out of concern it would become obligatory for his community. See What is taraweeh and do I have to pray it?

What you must not skip is Isha. That's fard, so pray it on time, even if the match is on.

What you'd be missing

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever stands in prayer during Ramadan out of faith and hoping for reward, his previous sins will be forgiven" (Sahih al-Bukhari 37). He also said that whoever prays with the imam until he finishes is recorded as having prayed the whole night (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 806).

A league match comes back every week. Ramadan comes once a year, and nobody knows if they'll see the next one.

يُرِيدُ ٱللَّهُ بِكُمُ ٱلْيُسْرَ وَلَا يُرِيدُ بِكُمُ ٱلْعُسْرَ "Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship." Quran 2:185

Smart ways to have both

  • Pray at home: taraweeh at home is valid and many scholars say it's fine, especially for those with a reason. Pray before or after the match. See Can I pray taraweeh at home?
  • Pray part of it: leave after 8 rakahs, or come for the second half. Some is better than none.
  • Watch later: record it or watch extended highlights after taraweeh, without spoilers.
  • Big finals: for a once-in-a-decade final, a missed night isn't the end of the world. Just don't let it become every night.

Keep your heart in check

The real question isn't one match; it's whether football (or anything) slowly takes first place in your life. If you notice you always choose the game over worship, that's worth a quiet conversation with yourself. The same balance applies to Friday prayer, which is obligatory. Key points
  • Taraweeh is a strong sunnah; skipping it isn't a sin.
  • Isha is obligatory, so never miss it for a match.
  • Praying at home or praying part of taraweeh are good options.
  • Ramadan nights are rare; matches come back every week.
Tip: Check the fixtures at the start of Ramadan and plan ahead. Many Muslim football fans pray taraweeh at home on big match nights and invite friends over to pray together before kick-off.
