Yes, you can stay in an Airbnb where a dog lives. Being in the same house as a dog isn't haram. You just need a clean place to pray and to wash anything a dog licks, and you may prefer a dog-free listing if it makes life easier.

Staying near a dog isn't a sin

Islam doesn't forbid being around dogs. The Prophet ﷺ even told of a man who was forgiven for giving water to a thirsty dog (Sahih al-Bukhari 2363). What Islam discourages is keeping a dog inside your own home without a need, because "the angels do not enter a house in which there is a dog or a picture" (Sahih al-Bukhari 3322). That hadith is about your home and your choices, not about a short stay in someone else's place. See Can I keep my dog after becoming Muslim?

What about cleanliness?

The majority of scholars (Shafi'i and Hanbali, and in part Hanafi) consider a dog's saliva impure. The Prophet ﷺ said that if a dog drinks from your container, you should wash it seven times (Sahih al-Bukhari 172). The Maliki school sees the dog itself as pure and the washing as an act of worship rather than about dirt.

  • Dry fur touching you doesn't make you impure, according to most scholars.
  • A lick on your hand or clothes: wash that spot. The full seven washes are for dishes it drinks from.
  • Wudu: touching a dog doesn't break it. See Does touching a dog break my wudu?
يُرِيدُ ٱللَّهُ بِكُمُ ٱلْيُسْرَ وَلَا يُرِيدُ بِكُمُ ٱلْعُسْرَ "Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship." Quran 2:185

Praying in the apartment

You need a clean spot, not a perfect house. Lay down your own travel mat or a clean towel in a corner the dog doesn't use, and pray there. Shut the bedroom door if you can. See How do I pray in a hotel room?

Choosing the right listing

  • Check the "pets on property" note before booking. Hosts must list resident animals.
  • If you'd rather avoid it, filter for entire homes without pets.
  • If you book anyway, message the host kindly: ask whether the dog stays out of the guest room. Most hosts are happy to help.
  • Use your own cups and plates or rinse shared ones before use.
Key points
  • Staying in a house with a dog isn't haram.
  • Most scholars treat dog saliva as impure; wash what it licks.
  • Pray on your own clean mat in a dog-free spot.
  • A dog-free listing is simpler but not required.
Tip: Pack a thin travel prayer mat and a small water bottle for istinja. Those two items make almost any Airbnb, hotel or hostel workable for prayer.
