Yes. Coca-Cola and other mainstream sodas are halal. They don't contain pork or alcohol as an ingredient, and they're sold everywhere in Muslim-majority countries, often with halal certification. The rumors about "secret alcohol" don't change the ruling. Just go easy on the sugar.

Food and drink are halal by default

In Islam, the starting point is that what's on earth is allowed, unless there's a clear reason to forbid it.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ كُلُوا۟ مِمَّا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ حَلَـٰلًا طَيِّبًا "O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth that is lawful and good." Quran 2:168

Soda is water, sugar, flavoring, caffeine and bubbles. None of that is forbidden.

What about the alcohol rumor?

You may read online that cola contains tiny traces of alcohol from its "natural flavors." Even if a microscopic trace comes from making flavor extracts, it isn't a drink that can intoxicate, and you'd never get drunk from it no matter how much you drank. Most scholars treat this like the trace alcohol in bread or ripe fruit: not a problem. The same idea is explained in Is vanilla extract haram because it has alcohol?

Drinks to double-check

  • Hard seltzers and alcoholic "pops": they look like soda but contain alcohol.
  • Shandy and radler: soda mixed with beer.
  • Pre-mixed cocktails: often sold next to soft drinks.
  • Kombucha: some brands contain small amounts of alcohol; look for "alcohol-free."

Energy drinks and caffeine

Caffeine isn't an intoxicant, so coffee, tea, cola and energy drinks are all allowed. Islam does ask you to look after your body, and the Quran warns against throwing yourself into harm (Quran 2:195). So if you're downing several energy drinks a day, the problem isn't halal or haram labels. It's your health. See Can I still drink kombucha as a Muslim?

Boycotts are a separate question

Some Muslims choose not to buy certain brands for political or ethical reasons. That's a personal or community choice, not a ruling that the drink itself is haram.

So if a friend offers you a Coke at a barbecue, you can say yes without a second thought.

Key points
  • Coca-Cola and normal sodas are halal.
  • Trace amounts from flavorings don't make a drink haram.
  • Watch for alcoholic drinks that look like soda.
  • Caffeine is fine; just don't overdo it.
Tip: At a party or bar, ask for your soda "in a can" or check the label. It's an easy way to be sure nothing was mixed in.
