Can I still drink kombucha as a Muslim?

Yes, regular kombucha is allowed by most scholars. It contains only a tiny trace of alcohol from natural fermentation, similar to some juices and breads, and it can't make you drunk no matter how much you drink. "Hard kombucha," which is brewed to be alcoholic, is a different drink and isn't allowed.
Why trace alcohol isn't the same as wine
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "Every intoxicant is Khamr and every intoxicant is forbidden" (Sahih Muslim 2003). He also said: "If a large amount of anything causes intoxication, a small amount of it is prohibited" (Sunan Abi Dawud 3681).
Scholars use this as the test: could a large amount of this drink make you drunk? Regular kombucha usually has under 0.5% alcohol, and drinking liters of it wouldn't intoxicate you. That's why many scholars treat it like ripe fruit or fresh bread, which also contain natural traces.
Hard kombucha is different
Some brands sell "hard kombucha" with 4% to 7% alcohol, like beer. That's an intoxicating drink and is haram, even in small sips. It's often sold in cans that look almost identical to regular kombucha. Always check the label:
- Non-alcoholic / under 0.5%: generally fine.
- "Hard," "boozy" or a clear ABV percentage like 5%: avoid.
Homemade kombucha
If you brew your own, the alcohol level can rise if you ferment it too long or seal it too tightly. Keep fermentation times short, store it in the fridge, and if it ever tastes or smells like alcohol, pour it out.
The cautious view
Some scholars prefer to avoid any drink that's produced by fermentation and sold next to alcoholic products, to stay far from doubt. If that view feels right to you, there are plenty of other healthy drinks.
