Yes, you can still have Christian friends as a Muslim. Islam asks you to be kind, fair and loyal to people who live peacefully with you, whatever their faith. What changes is not the friendship itself but a few activities you now skip, like drinking or joining in religious worship.

Kindness to peaceful neighbours is a Quranic command

The Quran draws a clear line: people who don't fight you over your religion deserve goodness and justice from you.

لَّا يَنْهَىٰكُمُ ٱللَّهُ عَنِ ٱلَّذِينَ لَمْ يُقَـٰتِلُوكُمْ فِى ٱلدِّينِ وَلَمْ يُخْرِجُوكُم مِّن دِيَـٰرِكُمْ أَن تَبَرُّوهُمْ وَتُقْسِطُوٓا۟ إِلَيْهِمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُقْسِطِينَ "Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly." Quran 60:8

The Quran also speaks warmly of many Christians, describing them as among the people nearest in affection to the believers (Quran 5:82). See What does the Quran say about Christians?

The Prophet ﷺ had non-Muslim neighbours and helpers

A Jewish boy used to serve the Prophet ﷺ. When the boy fell ill, the Prophet ﷺ went to visit him at home (Sahih al-Bukhari 1356). He traded with non-Muslims, accepted their gifts and answered their invitations. Ordinary friendship, help and good manners across faiths are part of the Sunnah, not an exception to it.

What about the verse on "awliya"?

Some people quote Quran 5:51, which tells believers not to take Jews and Christians as awliya. Most scholars explain that this word means allies and protectors in matters of war and religious loyalty, not a colleague you have lunch with or a friend from school. Reading it as a ban on all friendship would contradict Quran 60:8 and the Prophet's own practice.

Choose your closest company wisely

The Prophet ﷺ said, "A person is upon the religion of his close friend, so let each of you look at whom he befriends" (Sunan Abi Dawud 4833). This applies to all friends, Muslim or not. A kind Christian friend who respects your prayer times is a good companion; a Muslim friend who pulls you toward sin is not. Try to also build a few Muslim friendships so your faith has support.

  • Keep meeting for coffee, walks, sport, films and birthdays (with halal food).
  • Skip the parts that clash with your faith, like drinking or joining a church service as a worshipper.
  • Invite them into your world too: Eid lunch or an iftar. See Can I invite non-Muslim friends to iftar?

Key points
  • Christian friendships are allowed and can be a blessing.
  • Quran 60:8 commands kindness and justice to peaceful people.
  • Quran 5:51 is about alliances, not everyday friendship.
  • Your closest friends shape your faith, so choose them well.
Tip: Tell your Christian friends what has changed and what hasn't. A simple "I still love hanging out, I just don't drink now" keeps most friendships going stronger than before.
