Can I still play on a mixed sports team as a Muslim?

It depends. Many scholars allow it when the sport doesn't involve close physical contact with the opposite sex, you can wear modest kit, and the atmosphere stays respectful. A casual mixed running club or volleyball league is very different from a contact sport like mixed rugby or wrestling.
The principles that matter
Islam doesn't forbid men and women from being in the same place, playing the same game or cheering for the same team. What it asks is modesty in dress, in the way we look at each other, and in physical contact.
The next verse gives the same instruction to believing women (Quran 24:31). So the question isn't really "mixed or not," but whether you can keep these limits while playing.
Physical contact
Most scholars say touching a non-mahram person of the opposite sex isn't allowed, which is why many converts stop shaking hands. See Can I still shake hands with the opposite sex as a Muslim?
In sports, this usually means:
- Low or no contact (running, cycling, tennis doubles, volleyball, bowling, ultimate frisbee): usually fine with the right conduct.
- Incidental contact (mixed 5-a-side football, basketball): scholars differ. Some allow it if contact is accidental and rare; others advise single-sex leagues.
- Built-in contact (mixed wrestling, rugby, dance-style sports): most scholars say avoid it.
Kit and changing rooms
For men, cover from the navel to the knee, so go for longer shorts or leggings underneath. For women, many sports now accept long sleeves, leggings and sports hijabs. See How do I wear hijab for sports?
Changing rooms are often the hardest part. Change in a cubicle or at home, and don't shower in open communal showers where the awrah is on show. Most clubs in the US and UK will accommodate this if you ask.
The social side
Team culture can include post-match drinks, flirting or hugs after a goal. You can still be a great teammate without those: a fist bump with same-sex teammates, a smile and a "good game" to everyone, and suggesting a café instead of the pub. If it's a school team, see What if my school PE uniform isn't modest?
If a mixed team keeps putting you in awkward spots, look for women's or men's leagues, Muslim sports clubs, or ask your mosque. Many cities have them now.
- Being on a mixed team isn't automatically haram.
- Avoid sports with built-in physical contact with the opposite sex.
- Wear modest kit and use private changing space.
- Scholars differ on incidental-contact sports; single-sex leagues are the cautious option.
