It depends on which scholars you follow. Playing for money is gambling, and that's haram according to everyone. Without any money or prizes, many contemporary scholars allow card games like poker for fun, as long as they don't make you miss prayers. Many classical scholars were stricter about games of chance.

Betting is clearly forbidden

The Quran calls gambling (maysir) "defilement from the work of Satan" and tells believers to avoid it (Quran 5:90). That includes:

  • Playing for cash, even small stakes.
  • A "buy-in" where everyone pays and the winner takes the pot.
  • Betting snacks, chores or anything of value.
  • Online poker with real money.

The stricter view

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ strongly condemned a dice game called nardashir: "He who played nardashir is like one who dyed his hand with the flesh and blood of swine" (Sahih Muslim 2260). Many classical scholars extended this to other games that depend mainly on luck, and some included card games. They also worried that such games are a gateway to gambling and waste hours.

The more lenient view

Many contemporary scholars say a card game played with no money and no prizes is simply a pastime. Poker, in particular, involves real skill: reading people, calculating odds, staying calm. Under this view, a friendly game with plastic chips that are worth nothing can be fine.

Conditions if you do play

  • No real value at stake: chips stay worthless, no "loser buys pizza."
  • Prayer first: pause the game at prayer time.
  • No alcohol at the table: common at poker nights, so pick your group wisely.
  • Keep it a hobby: not an all-night habit.

If you're trying to break a gambling habit

If you used to gamble, even a "free" game can pull you back. In that case, it's wiser to switch to other games, like board games, quizzes or sports, for a while. If gambling feels hard to control, talk to a doctor or a gambling support service. Getting help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
