Can I take a dance class at school as a Muslim?
It depends on the class. Many scholars allow modest movement and fitness-style dance among your own gender, especially for girls with a female teacher. A mixed class with partner dancing, tight outfits or a public performance is generally discouraged or not allowed, so asking for an alternative PE activity is often the safer choice.
Why dance is a grey area
Islam has no single verse that bans all movement to a rhythm. On Eid, the Prophet ﷺ let the Abyssinians perform their spear display in the mosque while Aisha watched, which many scholars cite to show that lively physical display is not haram in itself. What scholars object to is dancing that is suggestive, mixes genders closely, or draws attention to the body. The Quran tells women:
Scholars take this as a principle: movement meant to show off the body is not for a mixed audience. That is why views differ by type of dance and setting. See Can I still dance at weddings as a Muslim?
Which classes are usually fine, and which aren't
- Usually fine: a girls-only or boys-only class focused on fitness, coordination or folk movement, in loose clothes. See Can Muslims do Zumba or dance workouts?
- Grey area: mixed classes where each student dances alone, or where the music has lyrics you'd rather not hear. Scholars also differ on music itself.
- Usually avoided: partner dancing like ballroom or salsa with the opposite gender, sensual styles, leotards or tight costumes, and performances in front of a mixed audience.
The Prophet ﷺ also said, "Whoever imitates a people is one of them" (Sunan Abi Dawud 4031), which some scholars apply to dances tied to another religion's rituals.
How to ask for an alternative
Talk to your PE or dance teacher early, ideally with a short note from a parent. Ask whether you can join the fitness part but skip partner work, do a solo routine, or switch to another unit like athletics, badminton or gymnastics. Most schools already make these adjustments for religious or medical reasons. For clothing, the same solutions as other PE lessons apply. See What if my school PE uniform isn't modest?
- Not all movement to music is haram; context matters.
- Single-gender, fitness-style classes are widely accepted.
- Partner, sensual and mixed-audience dancing are generally avoided.
- Schools can usually offer an alternative PE activity.
