Yes, many scholars allow drama class, as long as the roles and scenes stay within Islamic limits. Acting is understood by everyone as pretend, so most contemporary scholars don't count it as lying. Avoid scenes with romance or physical contact, immodest costumes, mocking religion, or acting out worship of other gods.

Is acting lying?

This is the main question scholars discuss. Lying means telling someone something false so that they believe it. In a play, the audience knows it's fiction, so most contemporary scholars say acting isn't lying in that sense. The Prophet ﷺ did warn against telling lies just to make people laugh (Sunan Abi Dawud 4990), which is why some more cautious scholars dislike acting altogether. Both views exist; the majority today allow it with conditions.

Conditions to keep in mind

  • No romance or touching. Kissing, hugging or flirtatious scenes with the opposite gender are not allowed, even on stage.
  • Modest costumes. Your awrah should stay covered, and hijab stays on if you wear it.
  • Men and women playing each other. The Prophet ﷺ cursed men who imitate women and women who imitate men (Sahih al-Bukhari 5885), so cross-gender roles are best avoided.
  • No mocking faith. Don't play scenes that ridicule Allah, prophets or any religion's sacred things.
  • No acts of worship to others. Pretending to pray to an idol or perform another religion's rituals is a red line for many scholars. See Can I be in the school Christmas play as a Muslim?

What drama can give you

Drama builds confidence, public speaking, teamwork and empathy. These are skills that help in job interviews, presentations and even in explaining your faith to others. Many Muslim students enjoy improvisation, script writing, directing, stage design, lighting or sound, which avoid most of the problem areas altogether.

Talking to your teacher

Drama teachers are used to adapting. Tell them early and kindly which kinds of scenes you can't do, and suggest alternatives: a different role, a monologue, or a backstage job for that piece. Most will be glad you joined and happy to work around it. If music is part of the class, the same approach works there. See Can I take music class as a Muslim? Key points
  • Most contemporary scholars allow acting since it's understood as fiction.
  • Avoid romance, touching, immodest costumes and cross-gender roles.
  • Never mock religion or act out worship of others.
  • Backstage roles and script writing are great options.
Tip: Before each new production, read the script first and flag anything that worries you right away. It's much easier for a teacher to adjust a role in week one than the week before the show.
