Can I take off my hijab at an all-women party?

Yes, if only women can see you. Bridal showers, henna nights, baby showers and girls' nights are great chances to dress up and relax. Just check for male staff, open windows or doors, and above all, photos and videos that might end up online.
Women-only is fine
The Quran allows a woman to show her adornment to "their women" (Quran 24:31). That's why women-only events are so popular in Muslim communities: you can let your hair down, wear a beautiful dress and do your makeup. At weddings, many women's sections feel like a fashion show, and that's allowed.
What to wear
Among women, the minimum covering is from navel to knee, but scholars encourage dressing as you would around close family: no very revealing outfits. The Prophet ﷺ said a woman should not look at another woman's private parts (Sahih Muslim 338), so modesty still has a place. Think elegant rather than exposing.
The photo problem
The real risk at women's parties today is the camera. The Prophet ﷺ said a woman shouldn't describe another woman to her husband as if he were looking at her (Sahih al-Bukhari 5240). A photo shared on social media does far more than a description. So:
- Ask the host if there's a no-phones or no-posting rule.
- Politely ask friends not to post pictures of you without hijab.
- Check group chats; private photos travel fast.
- Keep your scarf nearby for group photos you can't control.
Male staff and venues
- Hotel or hall staff, waiters and DJs are often men.
- Photographers and videographers may be men; ask for a female one.
- Glass walls, open doors and gardens can expose you.
- Men from the family may walk in, so have your hijab ready.
