Can I take part in a school talent show as a Muslim?

Yes, you can take part in a school talent show as a Muslim, if your act itself is halal. Poetry, spoken word, comedy, magic tricks, sports skills, art, nasheeds and many other acts are fine. What matters is the content of your act and how you present it, not the show itself.
Talent is a gift from Allah
Sharing a skill, making people smile and building confidence are all good things. There is nothing in Islam against competitions or showing your abilities in public. The early Muslims raced, wrestled and recited poetry in front of others, and the Prophet ﷺ enjoyed good poetry. So the talent show is not the issue. Your act is.
Acts that usually work well
- Spoken word or poetry, including poems about your faith journey.
- Clean stand-up comedy or a funny sketch.
- Magic tricks, juggling, Rubik's cube speed solving, freestyle football.
- Live painting, calligraphy or a short film.
- Martial arts or gymnastics, in modest clothing.
- Singing without instruments (a nasheed or a cappella). Scholars differ on music, so see Can I still listen to music after becoming Muslim? and Can I sing in the school choir as a Muslim?
Things to keep in mind
Keep the words clean. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent" (Sahih al-Bukhari 6018). For comedians this means no crude jokes, no mocking teachers or classmates, and no lies told just for a laugh. He warned, "Woe to the one who speaks and lies to make people laugh" (Sunan Abi Dawud 4990). Jokes about Islam need extra care too. See Can I share funny memes about Islam?
Dress modestly. Wear what you would normally wear in public as a Muslim, even if the rest of the act is in costume.
Dancing is where most acts run into trouble. Many scholars allow simple, modest movement among your own gender but discourage suggestive dancing in front of a mixed audience, especially for women. If your act involves dance, consider a version for an all-girls or all-boys event, or switch to a different talent.
Mind your intention. Showing your skill is fine; doing it only to be admired, or to show off, eats away at the good in it.
If friends want you in their act
You can join a group act as long as your part stays within these limits. Explain early, kindly and simply, for example "I'll do the beatbox and the backing visuals, but I won't do the dance part." Most friends are happy to adapt.
- Talent shows are allowed; the act itself must be halal.
- Keep jokes and lyrics clean and honest.
- Dress modestly on stage.
- Avoid suggestive dancing before a mixed audience.
