Can I take a road trip with friends of the opposite sex?

It depends, but most scholars advise against it. A mixed road trip usually means long hours close together, shared cars and shared rooms, and that is hard to keep within Islamic limits. A short day trip in a larger group with clear boundaries is viewed more leniently by some, while an overnight trip with friends of the opposite sex is generally discouraged.
Why Islam is careful here
Islam doesn't ban friendship with people of the opposite sex who are not your mahram, but it sets boundaries: lowering the gaze, modest speech and dress, and avoiding being alone together. The Prophet ﷺ said that no man should be alone with a woman unless a mahram is with her (Sahih al-Bukhari 5233). See What is a mahram?
The next verse gives the same instruction to believing women.
What makes a road trip tricky
- Seclusion. Two people alone in a car for hours, or one person dropped off last, is exactly the situation scholars warn about.
- Sleeping arrangements. Shared hotel rooms, tents or Airbnbs with friends of the opposite sex are not allowed.
- Relaxed atmosphere. Road trips are fun because everyone lets their guard down, with music, late nights and closeness. That's where boundaries slip.
- Travel without a mahram. Many scholars also discuss whether a woman may travel a long distance without a mahram. Opinions differ today, especially for safe travel in a group.
Halal ways to still enjoy the trip
- Go with friends of the same sex, or with family.
- If it's a mixed group activity, keep it a day trip, stay in a big group, and travel in separate cars.
- Plan prayer stops in advance so the trip supports your deen. See How do I pray on a road trip?
Talking to your old friends
If you were invited by friends from before you became Muslim, they probably don't mean any harm. Thank them, explain briefly that you're keeping some new boundaries, and suggest something else you can do together. Real friends usually understand. - Being alone with a non-mahram of the opposite sex is not allowed.
- Overnight mixed road trips are generally discouraged by scholars.
- Same-sex or family trips are the safest option.
- If a mixed outing happens, keep it short, in a group and in separate cars.
