Yes, you can, and you should if you are called. Islam asks witnesses to tell the truth even when it is against a close relative, because justice comes before family loyalty. You can do this without hatred, and you can still show your relative kindness, advice and support afterwards.

Justice comes before loyalty

The Quran speaks directly to this situation:

Stand firm for justice as witnesses for Allah even if it is against yourselves, your parents, or close relatives. Be they rich or poor, Allah is best to ensure their interests." Quran 4:135

Another verse adds, "do not conceal the testimony, for whoever conceals it, their hearts are indeed sinful" (Quran 2:283). If you have seen or heard something important and the court calls you, staying silent to protect a relative is not loyalty in Islam. See Can Muslims testify as a witness in court?

Truth, not revenge

The same rule works in both directions. Do not let love for family twist your words, and do not let anger or an old quarrel make you exaggerate. The Quran says, "Do not let the hatred of a people lead you to injustice" (Quran 5:8). The Prophet ﷺ warned against false witness again and again, until his Companions wished he would stop (Sahih al-Bukhari 2654). Simply say what you know, what you saw and what you do not know.

Helping your relative the right way

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Help your brother, whether he is an oppressor or he is an oppressed one," and explained that helping an oppressor means preventing him from oppressing others (Sahih al-Bukhari 2444). Telling the truth can be part of that help, because it stops harm and may push your relative to take responsibility.

Islam also encourages covering other people's private faults. The Prophet ﷺ said, "whoever screened a Muslim, Allah will screen him on the Day of Resurrection" (Sahih al-Bukhari 2442). Scholars apply this to private sins that harm nobody else. When another person has been wronged or is in danger, justice requires speaking up. Practical steps

  • Get legal advice. A lawyer or court office can explain what you must do and whether you have any right to decline. In some places the law lets certain relatives, such as spouses, refuse to testify. Using a legal right is not lying.
  • Never lie or hide evidence. Do not tell family what to say, and do not accept pressure to change your account.
  • Stay kind. Visit, write or pray for them if that is safe and appropriate.
  • Look after yourself. This is painful. Talk to a trusted imam, a friend or a counsellor.

Telling the truth about someone you love is hard, but it is also a way of keeping your word before Allah. See Is it haram to lie to the police?

Key points
  • Tell the truth in court even if it is against close relatives (Quran 4:135).
  • Do not conceal testimony or give a false one (Quran 2:283; Sahih al-Bukhari 2654).
  • Help a wrongdoer by stopping the wrong (Sahih al-Bukhari 2444).
  • Get legal advice and stay kind towards your family.
Tip: Before you give evidence, write down only the facts you personally know. A short, calm and truthful account is easier to give and easier to live with afterwards.
