Can I travel to meet someone I met online as a Muslim?

It depends on why and how you meet. Travelling to meet someone for a private date or to be alone together isn't allowed. Travelling to meet a potential spouse with family or a wali involved, in a public setting, with marriage as the clear goal, is allowed and is how many Muslim couples meet today.
Why the purpose matters
Islam allows getting to know someone for marriage, but it closes the doors that lead to zina. Allah says:
"Do not approach" means avoiding the situations around it too. A weekend trip to stay with someone you've been chatting with, sharing a hotel or spending days alone together is exactly the kind of situation this verse warns about.
Being alone together
The Prophet ﷺ said: "No man should be alone with a woman except with a mahram present" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5233), and that when a man and woman are alone, Shaytan is the third (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2165). Meeting in a café, a family home or another public place with others around avoids this. See Can I meet my potential spouse alone for coffee as a Muslim?
How to do it the halal way
- Be clear it's about marriage, not "seeing where things go".
- Involve family: a sister should have her wali or a trusted Muslim relative involved; a brother can bring a parent, friend or imam. See Do I need a wali to get married as a Muslim convert woman?
- Stay separately and meet in public or at the family's home.
- Women travelling: scholars differ on travelling without a mahram; many allow it today on safe routes, but bringing a relative or friend is wiser here.
- Pray istikhara before and after meeting.
Stay safe
Romance scams are common on apps and social media, including fake "practising Muslims". Before you book anything, do a video call with a chaperone present, speak with their family or local imam, and never send money. Tell someone you trust where you're going.
