Can I use my phone during the Friday sermon?

No, not for scrolling, texting or chatting. The Friday khutbah (sermon) is meant to be listened to in silence, and the Prophet ﷺ counted even small distractions during it as idle talk. Silence your phone and put it away. A genuine emergency is a different matter.

Why the khutbah needs your attention

The khutbah is part of Jumu'ah, the Friday congregational prayer, and listening to it is part of the worship. The Prophet ﷺ said that if you tell the person next to you "be quiet" while the imam is giving the Friday khutbah, you have engaged in idle talk (laghw) (Sahih al-Bukhari 934). If one word meant to stop someone else talking counts as idle talk, a conversation on WhatsApp clearly does too.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِذَا نُودِىَ لِلصَّلَوٰةِ مِن يَوْمِ ٱلْجُمُعَةِ فَٱسْعَوْا۟ إِلَىٰ ذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ وَذَرُوا۟ ٱلْبَيْعَ ۚ ذَٰلِكُمْ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ "O you who have believed, when [the adhān] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumuʿah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allāh and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew." Quran 62:9

Scrolling is today's "playing with pebbles"

The Prophet ﷺ promised that whoever listens silently to the khutbah is forgiven his sins until the next Friday, plus three more days. But he added that whoever fiddles with pebbles has engaged in idle talk (Sahih Muslim 857).

Back then, pebbles were what people had in their hands. Today it's a phone. Scholars apply the same meaning: scrolling, gaming, texting or checking the news all pull you away from the sermon and cost you that reward. Your prayer is still valid, but you lose something precious for a few minutes of nothing. See Is endless scrolling a waste of time in Islam?

What about emergencies?

Islam doesn't ask you to ignore a real emergency. If you're on call at work, caring for a sick relative, or waiting for urgent news about your child, a quick check, or quietly stepping out to deal with it, is understandable. The rule is about idle use, not genuine need. Just be honest with yourself about which one it is.

Simple habits for Friday

  • Silence it at the door: switch to silent or Do Not Disturb before you sit down.
  • Put it out of reach: a phone in your bag is far less tempting than one in your hand.
  • Come early: arriving early gives you time to pray, read Quran on your phone and settle in before the imam starts.
  • Phone down when he stands: once the khutbah begins, your job is to listen.

Key points
  • Listen to the khutbah in silence.
  • Texting or scrolling counts as idle play.
  • Idle use loses you a great reward.
  • Real emergencies are an exception.
Tip: Turn on Do Not Disturb as you enter the mosque and turn it off only after the prayer ends. Your messages will still be there.
