Yes, you can use wet wipes for istinja. Wiping with something clean and absorbent, like stones in the Prophet's ﷺ time or toilet paper and wipes today, is valid when it removes the impurity. Water is still the best, and many Muslims combine wipes with water when they can.

Two ways to clean after the toilet

Islamic law knows two methods. Istinja is washing with water, and istijmar is wiping with a dry, clean material. The Prophet ﷺ used both. He told the Companions not to clean themselves with fewer than three stones, and not with bones or dung (Sahih Muslim 262). Scholars of all four schools took from this that any pure, absorbent object that removes the dirt can replace stones: toilet paper, tissues, and wipes.

فِيهِ رِجَالٌ يُحِبُّونَ أَن يَتَطَهَّرُوا۟ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُطَّهِّرِينَ "Within it are men who love to purify themselves; and Allah loves those who purify themselves." Quran 9:108

Commentators link this verse to the people of Quba, who were praised for washing with water after wiping. So water is the more complete option. See Do Muslims have to use water instead of toilet paper?

How to use wipes properly

  • Wipe at least three times, and more if needed, until the wipe comes away clean. An odd number is recommended.
  • Use the left hand, as the Prophet ﷺ taught.
  • Unscented or fragrance-free wipes are kinder to skin. Alcohol in a wipe is not a purity problem for most scholars, since it isn't drinkable wine.
  • Don't flush them unless the pack says flushable. Blocking a shared toilet harms others.

When wipes alone aren't enough

Most scholars say wiping is enough as long as the mess stays around the opening. If it spreads widely, water becomes necessary. If you're unsure in a particular case, using water settles it. Wet wipes are also handy as a "travel bidet" because they are already damp, which helps remove traces better than dry paper.

Wudu after the toilet

Istinja and wudu are separate. Using the toilet breaks wudu, so you still need to make wudu before you pray, whether you used wipes or water. See What breaks wudu? Don't forget the short dua when you go in. See What dua do I say when entering the bathroom?

Key points
  • Wet wipes are valid for cleaning after the toilet.
  • Wipe at least three times until clean, with the left hand.
  • Water is better, and wipes plus water is best.
  • You still need wudu before prayer.
Tip: At work or on trips, keep a small pack of wipes and a refillable water bottle in your bag. Wipe first, rinse with a little water if you can, and you're done in a minute.
