Yes. As soon as you're Muslim, you can visit Mecca and perform Umrah, however new you are. In practice you'll need the right visa, and as a convert you may be asked for proof that you're Muslim, so plan the paperwork early. Rules change, so check the current Saudi requirements before you book.

Why proof can matter

Only Muslims may enter the city of Mecca. This is based on the verse telling the believers that the polytheists should not approach al-Masjid al-Haram (Quran 9:28). Converts, especially with a Western name, are sometimes asked for a "certificate of Islam" (also called a shahada certificate) when applying for a Hajj visa, booking through an agent, or at checkpoints on the roads into Mecca.

Most mosques and Islamic centers can issue one after your shahada, or later if you didn't get one. Your faith doesn't depend on a document; it's just practical paperwork. See Do I need a certificate to prove I'm Muslim?

Visas and booking Umrah

  • Tourist e-visa: citizens of the USA, UK and most EU countries can currently get a Saudi tourist visa online, which can be used for Umrah outside the Hajj season.
  • Umrah visa or package: licensed agents arrange visas, hotels and transport, which is easier the first time.
  • Permits: Saudi Arabia uses its official Nusuk app for Umrah permits and visiting the Rawdah in Medina.
  • Women: Saudi rules on women traveling for Umrah without a mahram have been relaxed in recent years; check the latest requirements and your agent's policy.

Keep in mind that a visa rule only tells you what's legally allowed. The religious question of traveling with a mahram is separate, so ask a scholar you trust if it applies to you.

Umrah first, Hajj when you're able

Umrah can be done any time of year and takes a few hours. The Prophet ﷺ said one Umrah is an expiation for the sins between it and the next, and an accepted Hajj has no reward except Paradise (Sahih al-Bukhari 1773). The Hanafi and Maliki schools consider Umrah a strong sunnah, while the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools say it's obligatory once in a lifetime.

Hajj is obligatory once in your life if you're an adult, sane and able, physically and financially.

وَلِلَّهِ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ حِجُّ ٱلْبَيْتِ مَنِ ٱسْتَطَاعَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلًا "And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House - for whoever is able to find thereto a way." Quran 3:97

Pilgrims from Europe and the USA usually book Hajj packages through Saudi Arabia's official online platform, with limited places each year. If you can't afford it yet, there's no sin in waiting. See Do I have to go to Hajj if I can't afford it?

Preparing as a new Muslim

Learn the steps of Umrah before you go: ihram, tawaf around the Kaaba, sa'i between Safa and Marwa, and cutting the hair. Many mosques run pre-Umrah classes, and going with an experienced group or friend makes a first visit much calmer. Seeing the Kaaba for the first time is a moment many converts never forget.
