Can I watch anime as a Muslim?

It depends on the show. Anime is just a style of animation, so it is judged like any other film or series, by its content. Plenty of anime is clean and harmless. Avoid shows with nudity, sexual content, mockery of faith or magic presented as real power, and keep an eye on how much time it takes.

Anime is a format, not a ruling

There is no Quran verse or hadith about anime, and no school of fiqh rules on it as a whole. Anime covers everything from gentle slice-of-life and sports stories to graphic horror and explicit adult material. So the question is not "is anime halal?" but "is this particular show halal?"

Many contemporary scholars also treat animation and cartoons differently from realistic images or sculpture, while a few take a stricter view of drawn images of living beings. If this matters to you, ask a scholar you trust.

What to watch out for

  • Nudity and fan service: common in some genres, even in shows that look innocent. Anything sexual, including "ecchi" and "hentai", is clearly out.
  • Magic and the unseen: fictional powers are one thing, but a story that presents sorcery, fortune-telling or worshipping other gods as admirable can pull the heart the wrong way.
  • Mockery of religion: storylines that ridicule God, prayer or scripture.
  • Graphic violence and gore: constant cruelty can harden the heart.
  • Romance and relationships: dating storylines are not forbidden to watch, but see whether the show glorifies zina or immodest behaviour.
  • Music: opening songs and soundtracks fall under the usual scholarly difference over music.

Fantasy magic is a common concern in anime, as it is in Western fantasy. See Can I still watch Harry Potter as a Muslim?

The basic principle: lower your gaze

Allah tells believers to guard their gaze and their chastity:

قُل لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَغُضُّوا۟ مِنْ أَبْصَـٰرِهِمْ وَيَحْفَظُوا۟ فُرُوجَهُمْ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ أَزْكَىٰ لَهُمْ "Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their chastity. That is purer for them." Quran 24:30

The following verse gives the same instruction to women (Quran 24:31). It applies to drawn characters too: if a scene shows revealing or sexual material, it is better to turn it off, even if the characters aren't real.

How to choose and watch wisely

  • Check the age rating and read a parents' guide or reviews first.
  • Prefer sports, adventure, comedy, history and family stories.
  • Skip or stop an episode when it crosses a line, instead of "pushing through".
  • Watch time: binge-watching can quietly eat your prayer time and sleep.
  • Be honest with yourself about whether a show is making you more distant from Islam or less.

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Among the excellence of a person's Islam is that he leaves what does not concern him" (Jami at-Tirmidhi 2317). If a show is full of things that don't help you, letting it go is a sign of maturity. For similar guidance on kids' shows, see Can Muslim kids watch cartoons?

Key points
  • Anime is judged show by show, not as a whole.
  • Avoid nudity, sexual themes, mockery of faith and magic presented as admirable.
  • Lower your gaze, even with drawn characters (Quran 24:30-31).
  • Check ratings and reviews, and don't let it replace prayer or sleep.
Tip: Before starting a long series, watch the first episode with the "skip" button ready. If it needs skipping often, it's a sign to pick another one.
