It depends on what the Arabic says. Ordinary Arabic words, names and slogans are fine. But many scholars advise against wearing Quran verses or Allah's name on a T-shirt, because clothes get dirty, sat on and worn into the bathroom. If you do wear one, treat it with care.

First, check what it says

Arabic on a T-shirt is not automatically Islamic. Arabic is also the language of Christians, poets, singers and brands, and some printed designs contain random or mistranslated words, song lyrics or even rude phrases. Before wearing one, get a trusted friend or an online translator to read it. If you cannot read it, you cannot be sure what message you are carrying.

Quran verses and Allah's name

The Quran teaches respect for what is sacred:

وَمَن يُعَظِّمْ شَعَـٰٓئِرَ ٱللَّهِ فَإِنَّهَا مِن تَقْوَى ٱلْقُلُوبِ "And whoever honors the symbols of Allah, it is certainly out of the piety of the heart." Quran 22:32

Scholars therefore advise care with the Quran and the names of Allah. Clothes are washed, sat in, dropped on the floor and taken into the toilet, which are not fitting places for a verse. Many scholars discourage wearing them for this reason, while some are more lenient with short phrases like "Alhamdulillah" if they are treated respectfully. Because of this difference, plain shirts are the easy choice. See Can I wear jewelry with Quran verses on it?

If you do wear one

  • When you sit: do not sit on the print or let it lie on the floor. Keep it clear of the ground and of anything dirty.
  • When you stand and walk: wear a jacket or a plain top over it in places where it might be disrespected, such as a crowded club, a sports ground or a pub.
  • Toilet and bathroom: take it off or cover the writing before you go in.
  • Washing: washing it is fine, and washing it separately is a sign of care.
  • Worn-out shirts: do not throw them in the bin. Remove or cut out the printed part and dispose of it respectfully.

Treat the leftover print the way you would treat a damaged copy of the Quran. See How do I dispose of an old or damaged Quran?

Prayer and everyday wear

Busy prints can distract you in prayer, so a plain top is better when you stand before Allah. See Can I pray in clothes with pictures on them?

If you love the look, there are safer ways to get it. Choose a design with Arabic calligraphy of an everyday word or a poem, a shirt with the English meaning of a saying, or a simple Islamic pattern. Keep the verse itself on your tongue and in your heart, which is where it does the most good.

Key points
  • Check what the Arabic actually says before wearing it.
  • Many scholars advise against Quran verses and Allah's name on clothing.
  • If you wear one, keep it off the floor and out of the bathroom.
  • Plain shirts are better for prayer.
Tip: Ask yourself whether you would be comfortable sitting on the shirt, washing it on a hot cycle or wearing it into a crowded bar. If not, wear it only for special, clean occasions, or choose a different design.
