Yes, you can wear hijab as a nurse or doctor. Thousands of Muslim women work in hospitals across the UK, Europe and the USA wearing hijab. Most health services allow it as long as it meets infection-control rules, and many supply sterile or disposable hijabs for theatre.

Women healers in early Islam

Caring for the sick is a noble job for a Muslim woman. Women went out with the Prophet ﷺ to give water to the troops and treat the wounded (Sahih al-Bukhari 2882), and Umm Atiyyah said she went on seven campaigns, cooking and tending to the injured (Sahih Muslim 1812). Rufaida al-Aslamiyya is often remembered as the first Muslim nurse. Saving lives carries a huge reward:

وَمَنْ أَحْيَاهَا فَكَأَنَّمَآ أَحْيَا ٱلنَّاسَ جَمِيعًا "...And whoever saves one, it is as if he had saved mankind entirely." Quran 5:32

What hospitals usually require

  • Hijab tucked in or short enough not to dangle onto patients, plain colour, washed daily.
  • Theatre: a disposable surgical hijab or hood instead of your own scarf.
  • Bare below the elbows: many hospitals, including NHS England, ask staff to have bare forearms during direct patient care for hand hygiene. Many allow disposable over-sleeves or sleeves pushed up only while washing and treating.
  • No pins near patients; use magnetic or sewn-in styles, or a slip-on.

The forearm question

This is the main sticking point for many hijabi nurses. Most scholars say the forearms are part of a woman's awrah in front of non-mahram men, but they also allow uncovering where there's a real need and no workable alternative. First ask your trust about disposable sleeves; they're increasingly accepted. If that isn't possible, many scholars allow rolling sleeves up during hand washing and patient care, then covering again. If your workplace pushes back

In the UK and the USA, religious dress is protected by law (Equality Act 2010, Title VII), so employers must try to accommodate you. In parts of Europe, public hospitals may have neutrality rules. Speak to HR, your union, or a Muslim staff network. See What if my employer bans the hijab? If you're starting out, see Can I wear hijab to a job interview?

Key points
  • Wearing hijab as a nurse or doctor is allowed and common.
  • Follow infection-control rules with tucked, pin-free scarves.
  • Use sterile or disposable hijabs in theatre.
  • Ask about disposable sleeves for bare-below-elbows rules.
Tip: Ask if your hospital has a Muslim staff network. Colleagues there know which uniform options are approved and which hijab brands survive a 12-hour shift.
