It depends on the kind of makeup and on scholarly views. Most scholars say a Muslim woman shouldn't wear noticeable, beautifying makeup in front of non-mahram men, so full makeup at a mixed school is discouraged. Skincare, lip balm and very light, natural products are generally fine, and girls who haven't reached puberty aren't yet bound by these rules.

What the Quran says about adornment

The main guidance comes from the verse on modesty for women:

وَقُل لِّلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ يَغْضُضْنَ مِنْ أَبْصَـٰرِهِنَّ وَيَحْفَظْنَ فُرُوجَهُنَّ وَلَا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا "And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof." Quran 24:31

Many scholars count makeup as "adornment" (zinah), so it's kept for home, for women-only spaces, or for a husband. A minority of scholars allow light makeup on the face when it isn't eye-catching, especially where the face is uncovered anyway. Both views exist; ask a scholar you trust if you're unsure.

What's usually fine

  • Moisturizer, sunscreen and spot treatments.
  • Clear or tinted lip balm.
  • Concealer for acne or a skin condition, used to look normal rather than glamorous.
  • Neat eyebrows and a clean, tidy look (plucking eyebrows has its own rules, which differ by school).

The general test many scholars give: does it draw attention and make you look "done up"? Bold lipstick, heavy eyeliner, false lashes and contouring usually do.

Makeup and prayer

School days include Dhuhr, and sometimes Asr. Waterproof mascara, long-wear foundation or nail polish can stop water from reaching the skin or nails, which affects wudu. See Can I pray with nail polish on? If you wear anything like that, you'll need to remove it before wudu, which is hard in a school bathroom.

Girls who are still young

The rules on covering and adornment apply after puberty. A younger girl isn't sinful for wearing makeup, but parents often use those years to build good habits gently. See At what age should a girl start wearing hijab? If you already wear hijab, the same principles apply. See Can I wear makeup with hijab?

Key points
  • Most scholars discourage noticeable makeup around non-mahram men.
  • Skincare and very light, natural products are generally fine.
  • Remove waterproof products before wudu.
  • The rules apply after puberty; younger girls aren't sinful.
Tip: Put your effort into skincare: a good cleanser, moisturizer and SPF make your skin look healthy without makeup, and they don't get in the way of wudu at lunchtime.
