Yes, in most places you can wear niqab at university, but it depends on the country. In the UK and the USA it is generally allowed, with face checks for ID and exams. Some European countries, such as France, ban face coverings in public, which includes campuses.

What Islam says about niqab

Covering the face is a matter of real scholarly difference. Many Hanbali and Shafi'i scholars see it as required, while most Hanafi and Maliki scholars see it as recommended but not obligatory, as long as the rest of the body is covered. Both views come from the same verse:

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّبِىُّ قُل لِّأَزْوَٰجِكَ وَبَنَاتِكَ وَنِسَآءِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يُدْنِينَ عَلَيْهِنَّ مِن جَلَـٰبِيبِهِنَّ "O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments." Quran 33:59

The Prophet ﷺ also said a woman in ihram should not wear the niqab or gloves (Sahih al-Bukhari 1838), which shows face veils were known and worn at the time. For more detail, see Is niqab required in Islam?

Where it is allowed

  • UK: no general ban. Universities usually allow niqab, protected under the Equality Act 2010, but may ask you to show your face privately for ID, exams or some practical classes.
  • USA: generally allowed, with similar ID checks.
  • France, Belgium, Austria, Denmark and some others: face coverings are banned in public spaces, and that affects campuses. The Netherlands bans them in education buildings.

Rules change, so check your own university's dress policy before term starts.

Practical situations

  • ID and exam checks: ask for a female staff member to check your face in a private room. Most universities will arrange this.
  • Labs and clinical courses: safety rules may require something different. Talk to your department early.
  • Presentations and oral exams: some students lift the niqab only in front of female examiners, or present with it on. Ask what is possible.
  • Student cards: photos are usually taken by a woman if you request it. See Can I take off my hijab for a passport or ID photo?

If niqab is banned where you study

If a law or rule forces you to uncover your face, and you follow the view that niqab is obligatory, scholars say necessity allows what is required, and you are not sinful for what you cannot change. Many women in this situation keep a full hijab and modest clothing. See What if my school bans the hijab?
