Yes, you can. Cooking, carrying and serving food does not break your fast. You just can't swallow any of it. If you need to taste a dish, a tiny taste that you spit out is allowed. Plan your shifts, drink well at night and keep an eye on the heat so the work doesn't harm you.

Being around food doesn't break the fast

A fast is broken by deliberately letting food or drink reach your stomach, not by smelling it, plating it or handing it to a customer. Chefs, waiters and bakers fast in Ramadan every year. Your job is not a problem in itself as long as the food is halal. If your workplace serves pork or alcohol, that is a separate question. Tasting food as a cook

Scholars generally say a cook may taste a little food if there's a real need, such as checking the seasoning, as long as it is spat out and nothing is swallowed. Without a need, many consider it disliked. The full ruling is in Does tasting food while cooking break my fast?

At work you can make it easier on yourself:

  • Use the tip of a clean spoon and taste only a very small amount.
  • Spit it out straight away, and rinse your mouth gently with water without swallowing.
  • Ask a trusted colleague to do the final taste for seasoning if you can.
  • Rely on recipes, measurements, smell and experience for dishes you know well.

If you swallow by mistake

If you eat or drink forgetfully, such as swallowing a sip during a busy service, the fast stays valid. The Prophet ﷺ said: "If somebody eats or drinks forgetfully then he should complete his fast, for what he has eaten or drunk has been given to him by Allah" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1933). Carry on with your day. Swallowing on purpose, though, breaks the fast and you must make up that day later.

Heat, long shifts and your health

Kitchens are hot and floor staff are on their feet for hours. Allah does not ask more of a person than they can bear:

لَا يُكَلِّفُ ٱللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا "Allah does not require of any soul more than what it can afford." Quran 2:286

Healthy workers are expected to fast, and a demanding job does not automatically excuse you. But if you feel faint or unwell and fasting is really harming you, you may break the fast and make up the day later. For heavy long-term situations, speak to a trusted local imam about your own case. • Ask for an early shift or a shift that lets you break the fast at sunset.
  • Request a few minutes to pray Maghrib and eat dates and water at iftar time.
  • Ask in advance for Eid off, as it depends on the moon.
