Yes, jinn can be Muslim. The Quran tells us some jinn heard the Prophet ﷺ reciting, believed, and went back to call their people to Islam. Like humans, jinn have free will, so some are believers, some are disbelievers, and some are in between.

The jinn who listened to the Quran

Surah al-Ahqaf describes a group of jinn who came across the Prophet ﷺ reciting the Quran. They told each other to listen quietly, then returned to their people as warners, saying they had heard a Book confirming what came before it (Quran 46:29-31). A whole surah, Surah al-Jinn (chapter 72), opens with their words: "We have heard an amazing Quran. It guides to the right course, and we have believed in it" (Quran 72:1-2).

وَأَنَّا مِنَّا ٱلْمُسْلِمُونَ وَمِنَّا ٱلْقَـٰسِطُونَ ۖ فَمَنْ أَسْلَمَ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ تَحَرَّوْا۟ رَشَدًا "And among us are Muslims [in submission to Allah], and among us are the unjust. And whoever has become Muslim, those have sought out the right course." Quran 72:14

Here the jinn use the very word "Muslims" about themselves.

Was the Prophet ﷺ sent to jinn too?

Yes. Scholars agree the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was sent to both humans and jinn. Allah says He created jinn and humans to worship Him (Quran 51:56), so the same message applies to both. Ibn Mas'ud reported that a caller from the jinn came to the Prophet ﷺ, who went with him and recited the Quran to them. When they asked about their food, he said every bone over which Allah's name has been mentioned is theirs (Sahih Muslim 450).

The Prophet ﷺ also said that every person has a companion from the jinn (a qarin). When asked, "Even you?" he said yes, but Allah had helped him against his, so it only told him to do good (Sahih Muslim 2814).

What does a Muslim jinn do?

Scholars say believing jinn pray, fast and follow the Shariah in a way suited to their nature. They will be judged like us: the righteous ones enter Paradise according to the majority of scholars, while the disbelievers face punishment. The devils (shayatin) are the rebellious, disbelieving jinn, led by Iblis. So "jinn" does not automatically mean "evil." See What happens if you hurt a jinn?

Can I make friends with a Muslim jinn?

No. Even if a jinn claims to be Muslim, there is no way to verify it, and trying to contact jinn opens the door to deception and harm. The companions never sought out jinn for help, and Muslims are told to seek refuge in Allah alone. See Can jinn possess me after I become Muslim?

Key points
  • The Quran confirms some jinn are Muslims (Quran 72:14) after hearing the Quran (46:29-31).
  • The Prophet ﷺ was sent to jinn as well as humans.
  • Jinn will be judged; believing jinn are rewarded and disbelieving ones punished.
  • Never try to contact or befriend jinn, even ones that claim to be Muslim.
Tip: Next time you read Surah al-Jinn, notice that it's the jinn's own story of conversion. As a new Muslim, you might find their "we heard, and we believed" surprisingly relatable.
