Can kids watch the qurbani slaughter?

Yes, kids can watch the qurbani slaughter; nothing in Islam forbids it. In many Muslim countries children grow up seeing it. Whether your child should watch depends on their age, temperament and how well you prepare them. In much of Europe and the USA it happens at a licensed slaughterhouse anyway, so the question may not come up.
What Islam says
There's no rule keeping children away. The Prophet ﷺ slaughtered his own sacrifice in the open on Eid, and families of the Companions took part together. The story behind qurbani is itself a story of a father and son, told in the Quran:
What Islam does insist on is mercy. The Prophet ﷺ said that Allah has prescribed excellence in everything, so when you slaughter, slaughter well: sharpen the blade and let the animal be at ease (Sahih Muslim 1955). Scholars add that the knife shouldn't be sharpened in front of the animal and one animal shouldn't be slaughtered while another watches. Seeing this care can teach children a lot. Is it good for children to see it?
For many families it's a meaningful lesson: meat comes from a living animal, life belongs to Allah, and we say His name and treat animals gently. Children who see it calmly often grow up more grateful and less wasteful. But there's no reward lost if a child doesn't watch, and no child should be forced.
- Young children (under about 7) may be frightened. Many parents keep them nearby for the takbir and the meat sharing, but away from the slaughter itself.
- Older children who are curious can watch with a parent next to them, after a simple explanation.
- Sensitive children of any age can skip it. Respect their feelings.
How to prepare them
- Tell the story of Ibrahim and Ismail first, in a gentle, age-appropriate way.
- Explain what will happen: a quick, sharp cut, "Bismillah, Allahu akbar", and that the animal loses consciousness fast.
- Let them ask questions afterwards, and don't laugh at fears or tears.
- Involve them in the happy part: sharing the meat with neighbours and the poor.

In Europe and the USA
Most countries only allow religious slaughter at licensed slaughterhouses, and many converts book qurbani through a charity abroad. Some farms let families attend; check the rules first. If watching isn't possible, a video from a trusted charity, plus cooking a dish together, still makes qurbani real for kids. See How do I celebrate Eid with my kids?
