Can men pray in shorts?

Yes, if they cover you properly. A man's prayer is valid in shorts that cover everything from the navel to the knee, including when he bows, prostrates and sits. Knee-length or longer shorts are the safe choice. Short shorts that ride up are not enough.
What a man must cover in prayer
Most scholars say a man's awrah, the part of the body that must be covered, is from the navel to the knee. The Hanafi school counts the knee itself as awrah. The Shafi'i and Hanbali schools do not, though covering it is safer. A minority view treats the thigh as a lighter awrah, but the main position in all four schools is to cover it. The covering has to last from the opening takbir to the final salam.
Check your shorts in every position
Standing is rarely the problem. The trouble starts when you move:
- Shorts that end above the knee can slide up the thigh when you sit for the tashahhud.
- A short shirt can rise and show your lower back when you bow.
- Very thin or tight fabric may show the skin underneath.
Try rukuʿ, sujood and sitting in front of a mirror before you decide a pair of shorts works for prayer. If part of the awrah showed during a past prayer and you are unsure what to do, ask a trusted local imam whether it needs repeating.
The shoulders and the top half
The Prophet ﷺ said that none of you should pray in a single garment that does not cover the shoulders (Sahih al-Bukhari 359). Scholars differ on how strict this is. Most take it as a strong recommendation, while some, including the Hanbali school, treat covering at least one shoulder as required. A normal T-shirt solves it either way. A sleeveless vest or tank top may not.
Easy fixes
- Keep a pair of light trousers or tracksuit bottoms in your bag or locker.
- Wear thin leggings or tights under shorts after sport.
- Buy shorts that reach below the knee and stay there when you sit.
- Choose a T-shirt over a tank top.

Beyond the minimum
Prayer is standing before Allah, so many men dress better than the minimum:
Scholars read this as encouragement to wear clean, decent clothes. Shorts are valid if they cover you, but trousers feel more respectful, especially for Jumu'ah, and many mosques ask men to wear them.
- Men must cover navel to knee throughout the prayer.
- Hanafis include the knee, so knee-length or longer is safest.
- Check your shorts in sujood and when sitting, not just standing.
- Keep trousers or leggings handy after sport.
