Can Muslim kids play Fortnite?

It depends, and scholars differ. Many scholars say a game like Fortnite is allowed for kids if it doesn't cause them to miss prayers, swear, overspend or chat with strangers unsupervised, and if parents set clear limits. Others take a stricter line and advise against it because of the shooting, the dance emotes, the music and how addictive it can be. Either way, it's the parent's call, made with eyes open.

Why scholars differ

Games are generally allowed in Islam, and play is a normal part of childhood: Aisha played with dolls and her friends in the Prophet's ﷺ home (Sahih al-Bukhari 6130). See Can I still play video games as a Muslim? The disagreement is about Fortnite's content and effects:

  • Stricter view: some teachers and fatwa sites say Muslims, especially children, should avoid it. Their reasons are the constant shooting, the dances and background music, flashy skins, and the way it eats up time and attention.
  • Content-based view: others say the cartoon violence is mild, with no blood, and that the game is permissible when the harmful parts are managed, like turning music off and keeping play time short.

Both views agree on one thing: if a child is missing prayers, getting angry, lying about screen time or neglecting school, it has become harmful.

The parts to watch

  • Age rating: Fortnite is rated 12 (PEGI) in Europe and T for Teen (ESRB) in the US. That's a useful guide for younger kids.
  • Voice and text chat: strangers can talk to your child. Turn chat off or limit it to friends, using the built-in parental controls.
  • V-Bucks and purchases: kids can spend real money fast. Require a parent PIN or remove saved cards.
  • Emotes and music: some families mute music and skip dance emotes. See Can I still listen to music after becoming Muslim?
  • Skins: a few outfits are immodest or have religious symbols; you can steer away from those.

Your role as a parent

Islam makes parents responsible for what happens in the home. The Prophet ﷺ said "All of you are guardians" and responsible for those in your care (Sahih al-Bukhari 893). The Quran puts it strongly:

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ قُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَكُمْ وَأَهْلِيكُمْ نَارًا "O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire..." Quran 66:6

That doesn't mean banning everything. It means knowing what your child plays, who they play with, and how it affects them.

Practical house rules

  • Prayer and homework first, game after.
  • A daily or weekend time limit, with a timer.
  • Console in a shared room, not the bedroom.
  • No cursing, in the game or out of it.
  • Offer alternatives: building or sports games, or Fortnite's non-combat modes.
Key points
  • Scholars differ: some advise against Fortnite, others allow it with limits.
  • Check the 12/Teen rating, chat settings and in-game spending.
  • It becomes harmful when it pushes out prayer, school or good manners.
  • Parents are responsible for setting clear, kind boundaries.
Tip: Play a round with your child before deciding. Seeing the game yourself makes your rules fairer and the conversation much easier.
