Can Muslim men carry a handbag?
Yes, Muslim men can carry a bag. Backpacks, messenger bags, laptop bags and "man bags" are all fine. What men should avoid is a bag that is clearly designed and seen as a women's item where they live, because Islam forbids men imitating women in dress.
Bags are just useful objects
There is nothing in the Quran or Sunnah that says a man can't carry something on his shoulder or in his hand. People in every era carried their things in pouches, saddlebags and satchels. Today men carry phones, wallets, keys, chargers and laptops, so a bag is often a practical need. In Islam, everyday things are permitted unless there is evidence that they're forbidden.
The rule on imitating women
The real question is about style. Ibn Abbas reported that the Prophet ﷺ cursed men who imitate women and women who imitate men (Sahih al-Bukhari 5885). Scholars explain that this is about things that are specific to one sex in a given culture: clothes, jewellery, ways of walking or speaking. Because it depends on culture, the same item can be a men's item in one country and a women's item in another.
- Fine: backpacks, briefcases, crossbody or sling bags, gym bags, tote bags sold for everyone, small pouches for travel.
- Avoid: a purse or clutch that is clearly marketed and seen as women's, especially with feminine designs like bows, glitter or flowers.
- Grey area: designer "man bags" are normal menswear in many European cities. If people around you see it as a men's style, it isn't imitation.

Other things to keep in mind
- Materials: a bag with gold fittings is a debated point; men can't wear gold jewellery, but most scholars allow small gold details on objects that aren't worn. See Can Muslim men wear gold rings?
- Leather: avoid pigskin; most other leather is fine. See Can Muslims wear pigskin leather?
- Showing off: spending huge sums on luxury brands just to impress others goes against Islam's dislike of arrogance and waste.
A handy bag for a Muslim
Many brothers find a small bag useful for their faith too: a travel prayer mat, a compass app on the phone, a miswak, a water bottle for wudu, and a small pocket Quran. That's a bag that brings reward every day.
- Men can carry bags; it's a normal, practical item.
- Men must not imitate women in dress or accessories.
- What counts as "women's" depends on local culture.
- Avoid pigskin, gold jewellery-style pieces and showing off.
