Can Muslim men have a goatee or a styled beard?

A styled, tidy beard is fine, but a goatee usually isn't, according to most scholars. A goatee means shaving the cheeks and jaw, which are part of the beard. Shaping the neckline, trimming stray hairs and keeping it neat is allowed.
What counts as "the beard"?
In Islamic law, the beard (lihyah) is the hair that grows on the jawbones and the chin, from the sideburns down. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Do the opposite of the polytheists: let the beard grow and trim the mustache" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5892). So the command covers the cheeks and jaw, not just the chin.
A goatee keeps only the chin hair and shaves the rest. Most scholars of the four schools see this as shaving part of the beard, so it falls under the same ruling as shaving: not allowed for most, and strongly disliked for a minority.
What styling is allowed?
- Neckline: many scholars allow cleaning up hair on the neck below the jaw, since it isn't part of the beard. Some disagree, so it's a matter of differing opinion.
- Cheek line: trimming a few stray hairs high on the cheeks is allowed by many; others say leave them.
- Length: trimming what goes beyond a fist is allowed in the Hanafi and Hanbali schools, following Ibn Umar.
- Shaping: combing, oiling and evening out the edges so it looks neat is fine.
The goal is a beard that looks cared for, not one cut into a fashion shape that removes most of it.
Beard dye and colour
Dyeing grey hair is a sunnah. When Abu Quhafa's white hair was brought to the Prophet ﷺ, he said to change it with something but avoid black (Sahih Muslim 2102). Henna and brown shades are common. Most scholars dislike or forbid pure black dye, while a minority allow it, especially for younger men. See Can I dye my hair?
Building up to a full beard
If you've had a goatee for years, letting the cheeks fill in can feel like a big change. Many converts grow it out gradually while friends and work get used to it. See Do I have to grow a beard right away? Hair on the head has more freedom; see Can Muslim men have long hair?
