Can Muslim men wear a kilt or a skirt?

It depends: a traditional men's kilt is generally fine, but a women's skirt is not. Many Muslim men around the world wear wrap-around garments like the sarong and lungi, and the Prophet ﷺ himself wore an izar. What matters is covering from navel to knee and not dressing like women.

Wrap garments are normal men's clothing in Islam

The izar, a cloth wrapped around the waist, was the everyday lower garment of the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions. Today Muslim men in Malaysia, Indonesia, Yemen, Somalia and South Asia still wear the sarong, ma'awis, macawiis or lungi, often to the mosque. So a garment without legs is not "feminine" in Islamic terms.

The Quran describes clothing as a blessing that covers and beautifies:

يَـٰبَنِىٓ ءَادَمَ قَدْ أَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْكُمْ لِبَاسًا يُوَٰرِى سَوْءَٰتِكُمْ وَرِيشًا ۖ وَلِبَاسُ ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ ذَٰلِكَ خَيْرٌ "O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment. But the clothing of righteousness - that is best." Quran 7:26

The Scottish kilt

A kilt is men's national dress in Scotland and is worn at weddings, ceilidhs and Burns Night. Because it's clearly a men's garment in that culture, most scholars wouldn't see it as imitating women. A Scottish convert can keep his heritage. Just check:

  • Length: a man's awrah is from navel to knee. Scholars differ on whether the knee itself must be covered (Hanafis say yes), so choose a kilt that reaches the knee or a little below.
  • Sitting and wind: wear shorts or underwear beneath, so nothing shows when you sit, climb stairs or dance.
  • No church service: wearing a kilt is fine; joining another religion's worship is a separate question.

A women's skirt is different

The Prophet ﷺ cursed men who imitate women and women who imitate men (Sahih al-Bukhari 5885). A skirt cut and sold as women's clothing, or worn as a statement of gender-bending fashion, falls under this. The key is how your society sees the garment, which is why the kilt and the lungi are fine but a women's skirt isn't. Women face the mirror question: see Can Muslim women wear men's-style clothes?

Don't make it too long either

For men, the sunnah is to keep the lower garment above the ankles. The Prophet ﷺ said that whatever of the izar hangs below the ankles is in the Fire (Sahih al-Bukhari 5787), and scholars link this especially to pride. A kilt won't have this issue, but a long sarong might. For short clothing at the gym, see Can I still wear shorts to the gym as a Muslim? Key points
  • Wrap garments like the izar and sarong are men's dress in Islam.
  • A traditional kilt is generally fine if it covers to the knee.
  • A women's skirt counts as imitating women (Sahih al-Bukhari 5885).
  • Wear shorts underneath and keep the hem above the ankles.
Tip: If you're a Scottish convert, wearing your kilt to Eid prayer can be a lovely way to show that Islam doesn't erase your culture. Pair it with a smart top and enjoy the conversations it starts.
