Can Muslim men wear a thobe in the West?

Yes, Muslim men can wear a thobe in the West. It's halal, comfortable and modest. But it isn't required either: Islam has no national dress, so jeans and a shirt are just as Islamic, as long as they're modest and clean.
What a thobe is
A thobe (also called a jubba, dishdasha or kandura) is a long, loose robe worn by men in the Gulf, North Africa and many other places. Similar garments include the South Asian kurta and the West African kaftan. Many converts like the thobe because it covers the awrah easily, feels relaxed in prayer, and connects them with the wider Muslim community.
Islam has no required uniform
The Prophet ﷺ wore the clothes of his people and time. What Islam asks of men is a set of principles, not a costume: cover from the navel to the knee, avoid silk and gold, avoid clothes made to look feminine, and avoid arrogance. Within that, local clothing is fine. Allah says:
So a thobe isn't "more Muslim" than a smart pair of trousers. Wear it because you like it, not because you feel you must.
Two things to watch
- Pride. The Prophet ﷺ warned that Allah will not look at a man who drags his garment out of pride (Sahih al-Bukhari 5783). Many scholars say a man's thobe should end above the ankles; others say the rule is about arrogance, not length. Either way, keep your heart humble.
- Showing off. Scholars warn against "clothes of fame", worn to stand out and be noticed. If a thobe in your town makes you the center of attention every day, some scholars say normal local clothes are better outside the mosque. Others say it's a healthy sign of identity. Use your judgment.
Practical choices in Europe and the USA
- Friday and the mosque: the most common time for a thobe, and a good habit. See Can I pray in jeans?
- Eid: many brothers save their best thobe for Eid. See What should I wear on Eid as a Muslim?
- Work: follow your workplace dress code; a modest Western outfit is perfectly fine.
- Winter: wear trousers or thermals underneath, and a coat over it.
- Safety: if you feel unsafe in a certain area, it's okay to dress like everyone else there.
- A thobe is halal and modest, but not required.
- Modest Western clothes are fully acceptable in Islam.
- Avoid arrogance and dressing to be noticed.
- Friday, the mosque and Eid are popular thobe days.
