It depends on the symbol. Crosses and occult symbols such as pentagrams or horned devil heads are not for Muslims to wear. Skull designs are not banned in themselves, but they are best avoided when they glorify death, violence, drugs or occult themes.

Crosses

The cross is the central symbol of Christian belief in the crucifixion, which Muslims do not hold. Aisha said she never left anything carrying images or crosses in the Prophet's ﷺ house without his removing it (Sahih al-Bukhari 5952). A shirt printed with a cross sends the same message as a necklace, even if you mean it as fashion. A cross-shaped pattern like a plus sign or a plaid is a different matter. Occult and other religious symbols

Avoid clothing with these designs:

  • Occult symbols: pentagrams, inverted crosses, goat-headed Baphomet figures and "666".
  • Horns and devil imagery: including the "devil horns" hand sign and horned demon heads.
  • Other faiths' sacred signs: religious emblems such as Om, deity images or Buddha heads worn as decoration.

The Prophet ﷺ said, "He who copies any people is one of them" (Sunan Abi Dawud 4031). Scholars apply this especially to religious symbols, which carry a clear identity and message, however you intend to wear them. Wearing them also normalizes beliefs that conflict with the oneness of Allah.

Skulls

No text bans skull prints in themselves. A plain skull is not an idol, not a religious emblem and not a picture of a living creature. The issue is the culture the design belongs to. Skulls are often tied to death metal, drug themes, gang imagery, horror films or the "Day of the Dead", a festival with religious roots. Some skull prints are only decoration or a pirate joke, which is much milder, but you should still look at the message they send.

Islam does ask us to remember death, but soberly. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Increase in remembrance of the severer of pleasures," meaning death (Jami at-Tirmidhi 2307). Glorifying death, mocking it or promoting violence does not fit that spirit. If a skull design is clearly a joke or art, it is a lighter matter than one that celebrates harm.

A quick check before you buy

  • What does the symbol or brand stand for? A quick online search usually answers that.
  • Would you be comfortable wearing it to the mosque or to meet your family?
  • Does it show hatred, drugs, nudity or mockery of faith?
  • Could you choose a plain version instead?

Other printed designs follow the same checks. See Can Muslim men wear graphic T-shirts?
