Not usually. Most scholars say men should not wear earrings or get an ear piercing, because earrings have long been women's jewelry and the Prophet ﷺ cursed men who imitate women. Some contemporary scholars are more lenient where a small stud is clearly seen as unisex, but avoiding it is the safer choice.

What the hadith says

Ibn Abbas reported that the Prophet ﷺ cursed men who imitate women and women who imitate men (Sahih al-Bukhari 5885). In his time, earrings were women's jewelry. After a sermon, the women gave charity, and "some donated their ear-rings" (Sahih al-Bukhari 98). For this reason, most scholars say a man wearing an earring is imitating women, which is not allowed.

What scholars say

  • Most scholars: an earring or ear piercing for a man is forbidden or strongly disliked, based on the hadith on imitation.
  • Some contemporary scholars: if a small stud is clearly considered unisex in a society, it is no longer imitation of women, so the ruling is lighter.
  • Both agree on this: a flashy or feminine style is not suitable, and it is safest to skip it.

The difference comes from how scholars understand the word "imitation". Because that is a matter of custom, which changes from place to place, and because avoiding it costs you little, most advise leaving it. Women's ears are fine to pierce, and adornment itself is not forbidden. See Can I keep my piercings after becoming Muslim?

If you already have one

If you had a piercing before you became Muslim, simply take the earring out. The hole will often close on its own, and if it does not, there is no sin in leftover marks. You do not need surgery or any special procedure. Wudu is unaffected, since you just wipe over the ears as usual.

If your culture or family is strongly attached to the stud, explain kindly that you are following your faith. Most people understand when it is put calmly. See Can Muslim men have long hair?

Other ways to express your style

Islam allows men plenty of ways to look good: a neat haircut and beard, a silver ring, a good watch and well-fitting clothes. Gold is the main thing to avoid. See Can Muslim men wear bracelets?
