Can Muslim men wear gold rings?

No. Wearing gold is forbidden for Muslim men, and that includes gold wedding rings. Muslim women can wear gold freely. Men can wear rings made of silver, platinum, titanium, tungsten or steel instead.
The evidence
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "Gold and silk have been permitted for the females of my Ummah, and forbidden to the males" (Sunan an-Nasa'i 5148, Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1720).
He once saw a gold ring on a man's hand, took it off and threw it away, warning that wearing it was like putting a live coal from Hell on one's hand (Sahih Muslim 2090). The man refused to pick it up again afterward, out of respect for what the Prophet had done.
The Prophet ﷺ himself used to wear a gold ring early on. Then he threw it away, said he would never wear it again, and switched to a silver ring. The companions followed his example (Sahih al-Bukhari 5866).
Why gold specifically? Scholars mention humility and avoiding extravagance, but the ruling doesn't depend on knowing the exact wisdom. Sometimes following a clear instruction, even without the full "why," is part of what faith means.
White gold and rose gold?
Both are still gold, just mixed with other metals, so most scholars give them the same ruling. Gold-plated jewelry is debated, and many scholars advise men to avoid anything that visibly looks like gold.
Platinum, despite being expensive and looking similar to white gold, is a different metal and is allowed.
What about my wedding ring?
Many converts already wear a gold wedding band. Some gentle options:
- Switch to a matching ring in silver, platinum or titanium.
- Talk to your spouse first. Explain it's about your faith, not about your marriage.
- Keep the gold ring as a keepsake. Owning gold is fine for men. Only wearing it is the issue.
Exceptions
Scholars allow gold for genuine medical needs, such as dental work. Small gold details on watches or glasses are debated, and the safest choice is to avoid visible gold.
None of this applies to women. Gold jewelry is fully allowed for them, and giving gold to your wife, mother or daughters is a common and lovely gift in many Muslim cultures, often as part of the marriage gift (mahr).
- Men may not wear gold, including white and rose gold.
- Women may wear gold.
- Silver, platinum, titanium and steel are fine for men.
- Owning gold is fine. Wearing it is the problem.
