Yes, in most cases. Almost all sports medals today are not real gold. They're usually silver, bronze or base metal with a thin gold coating, and many scholars allow men to wear them briefly on the podium. Keeping and displaying a medal at home is fine in every view. The caution is about actually wearing real gold as men.

Why gold is an issue for men

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Gold and silk have been permitted for the females of my Ummah, and forbidden to the males" (Sunan an-Nasa'i 5148, graded sahih). He once pulled a gold ring off a man's hand and threw it away, warning that wearing it was like carrying a live coal from Hell (Sahih Muslim 2090).

Scholars understand this as a ban on men wearing gold as an accessory or jewelry. Owning gold, saving it, or giving it as a gift is a different matter. See Can Muslim men wear gold rings?

What medals are really made of

Olympic gold medals have been made mostly of silver with a gold plating for over a century. Medals for local races, school championships and amateur leagues are usually zinc alloy, brass or steel with a gold-colored finish, and some aren't gold at all, just paint.

  • Gold-colored or painted: Not gold, so no issue.
  • Gold-plated: Scholars differ. Many allow a thin plating that can't be separated as gold, especially for something worn briefly. Others advise men to avoid anything that is visibly gold.
  • Solid gold: Very rare today. A man shouldn't wear one; he can keep it or hold it instead.

The podium moment

Many scholars point out that having a medal placed around your neck for a ceremony and photos isn't the same as wearing gold jewelry as an everyday adornment. Combined with the fact that most medals are only plated, they see no problem in accepting it on the podium. If you want to be extra careful, you can hold the medal in your hand or take it off after the photos.

The same thinking applies to other ceremonies, such as graduation. See Can I celebrate my graduation as a Muslim?

Trophies and displaying medals

Hanging your medals on the wall, keeping them in a box or displaying a trophy is fine. These aren't being worn, so the gold rule for men doesn't come into it. Just keep your intention right: thank Allah for the strength and the result, and don't let it turn into showing off.

  • Most medals are plated or not gold at all.
  • Many scholars allow a plated medal around the neck on the podium.
  • Keeping and displaying medals is fine for everyone.
Tip: When you step on the podium, say "Alhamdulillah" quietly. Winning with humility is the best way to show what Islam has taught you.
