It depends on the kind of makeup and the reason. Muslim men may use things that simply hide a flaw or protect the skin, like a bit of concealer on acne, tinted SPF or stage makeup for TV. Full "glam" makeup such as lipstick, eyeshadow and blush is generally not allowed, because it means imitating women.

The main principle

Islam loves cleanliness and a neat appearance. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Allah is beautiful and loves beauty" (Sahih Muslim 91). Looking presentable is good. But he also cursed men who imitate women and women who imitate men (Sahih al-Bukhari 5885). Scholars of all four schools say this covers clothing, jewelry and adornment that are typical of women in a given culture. So the question is less "is this product haram?" and more "is this a woman's style of adornment, or ordinary grooming?"

Usually allowed

  • Concealer or a light corrective product on acne, scars or dark circles, so you look normal rather than "made up".
  • Tinted moisturizer or SPF for skin protection.
  • Stage, film or TV makeup when the job needs it for lighting, as long as the role itself is halal.
  • Medical camouflage for burns, vitiligo or birthmarks, which many scholars treat as covering a defect.
  • Kohl (surma): a traditional eyeliner the Prophet ﷺ recommended for the eyes, describing ithmid as the best kohl because it clears the sight and helps the lashes grow (Sunan Abi Dawud 3878). Many men in South Asia and the Arab world wear it.

Usually not allowed

  • Lipstick, blush, eyeshadow, contouring or false lashes worn to look attractive.
  • Makeup trends aimed at looking feminine.
  • Painted nails, which also block water in wudu. See Can I make wudu with makeup on?

Some scholars are stricter and discourage any cosmetic product for men except kohl and oils. Others allow subtle corrective products. If you're unsure, ask a scholar you trust and keep things minimal.

Makeup and prayer

Water has to reach the skin in wudu. Most creams and light foundations don't form a waterproof layer, but heavier or waterproof products may. Remove them before wudu if in doubt. Women have a related guide too: see Can I wear makeup with hijab?

Key points
  • Corrective or protective products are generally fine for men.
  • Glam makeup counts as imitating women for most scholars.
  • Kohl is a sunnah-linked tradition for men.
  • Check that wudu water can reach your skin.
Tip: If acne or scars bother you, try good skincare first: a cleanser, moisturizer and SPF often do more than concealer. Covering a flaw is fine; feeling you must hide your face is worth talking about with someone you trust.
