Can Muslim men wear nail polish?

Generally no, most scholars say Muslim men should not wear nail polish. Coloured polish is widely seen as women's adornment, and Islam asks men not to imitate women. Ordinary polish also blocks water, so wudu done over it isn't valid for anyone.
The rule on imitating the opposite sex
Ibn Abbas reported that the Prophet ﷺ cursed men who imitate women and women who imitate men (Sahih al-Bukhari 5885). Scholars explain that this covers clothes, jewellery and adornment that are specific to the other sex in a given culture. In most places, painted nails are still understood as a feminine look, so the majority view is that men should avoid it.
Some people argue that nail polish has become unisex in parts of the West, worn by musicians and influencers. Scholars usually answer that a trend among a small group doesn't change what the wider society sees as women's adornment. The same principle works the other way too. The wudu problem
Even apart from imitation, normal polish forms a waterproof layer on the nails. In wudu, the hands must be washed completely:
If water can't reach the nail, the wudu is incomplete and the prayer isn't valid. This applies to men and women alike. For details see Can I pray with nail polish on? Gel and acrylic layers raise the same issue: Can I make wudu with acrylic or gel nails?
What is fine for men
- Clear nail care: filing, buffing, cuticle oil and a basic manicure are fine. Keeping nails short and clean is part of the sunnah.
- Medical treatments: anti-fungal lacquer or a bitter coating to stop nail-biting is a treatment, not adornment. Remove it before wudu, or follow your doctor's advice and ask a local scholar if it must stay on.
- Henna on the nails: henna stains rather than coats, so it doesn't block water. Scholars differ on henna on men's hands, though, and many reserve it for women.
If you already wear it
Many converts arrive with habits from their old life, and that's normal. There's no need to feel guilty about the past. Remove the polish before your next wudu, and let the habit go gently.
- Most scholars see coloured nail polish as women's adornment.
- Men imitating women is forbidden (Sahih al-Bukhari 5885).
- Normal polish blocks water, so wudu over it is invalid.
- Short, clean, well-groomed nails are a sunnah for men.
