It depends on the material and the style. Gold chains are forbidden for men. Many scholars also discourage necklaces in general because they are traditionally women's jewelry, while others allow a simple, masculine chain of steel, leather or similar where it's normal for men.

Gold is a clear no

The Prophet ﷺ said gold and silk are permitted for the women of his ummah and forbidden for its men (Sunan an-Nasa'i 5148). This covers gold chains, gold pendants and gold-plated chains for many scholars. See Can Muslim men wear gold rings?

Imitating women

Ibn Abbas said the Prophet ﷺ cursed men who imitate women and women who imitate men (Sahih al-Bukhari 5885). Scholars apply this to clothing and jewelry that are specific to the other gender in a given culture.

  • Stricter view: many classical and contemporary scholars say necklaces are women's adornment, so men should avoid them altogether, and that the only jewelry clearly allowed for men is a silver ring.
  • More lenient view: other scholars say it depends on local custom ('urf). A plain chain or cord that is clearly men's style in Western culture isn't imitating women, as long as it isn't gold.

Silver chains are debated too: some scholars restrict men's silver to rings, while others allow other modest silver items.

What the pendant says

Even when a chain is allowed, what hangs on it matters:

  • Religious symbols of other faiths: avoid. See Can Muslims wear a cross?
  • Charms for protection: the Prophet ﷺ said that ruqa (forbidden spells), amulets and love charms are shirk (Sunan Abi Dawud 3883). Lucky charms and nazar pendants fall under this.
  • Quran verses or Allah's name: treat them with respect; see Can I wear jewelry with Quran verses on it?
  • Practical items: dog tags, a medical ID or a key on a cord aren't jewelry and are fine.

Keep it simple

Islam encourages men to look clean and smart, not flashy. Real dignity comes from inner taqwa:

وَلِبَاسُ ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ ذَٰلِكَ خَيْرٌ "...But the clothing of righteousness, that is best." Quran 7:26
Key points
  • Gold chains are forbidden for men.
  • Scholars differ on other necklaces; many say avoid them.
  • Never wear amulets, lucky charms or other faiths' symbols.
  • Medical IDs and practical cords are fine.
Tip: If you had a favourite chain before Islam, ask yourself who it's for and what it says. A silver ring or a good watch can be a simple, safe alternative.
